Couchbase Mobile Enables New Breed of Network-Independent Mobile Applications

Mountain View, Calif. – May 21, 2014 – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, has released Couchbase Mobile, a new suite of products, that will revolutionize mobile applications.  Couchbase Mobile eliminates the network connection as a limitation by giving developers productized mobile data synchronization and the world’s first and only native embedded NoSQL mobile database.  These new products make it possible for mobile application developers to quickly and easily build apps that meet the always-on expectations of today’s users.

“With Couchbase Mobile, we reimagined how mobile applications should be built. Until now, mobile applications were built with the requirement that data must be stored in the cloud because it has been too hard to store and sync data from the device,” said Bob Wiederhold, Couchbase CEO. “Couchbase Mobile changes all that. Our mobile products give developers everything they need to build always-available and always-responsive applications in a fraction of the time it currently takes.  With Couchbase Mobile, the network no longer impacts application performance. When the network is unavailable, the app just works.”

Enabling the Next Generation of Mobile Applications

Mobile applications are expected to work anytime or anywhere, regardless of the limits of network availability or the complexity required to enable data synchronization. But mobile app developers are limited in the apps they can build because current mobile databases are all relational and thus poorly suited to manage the many types of unstructured data generated by today’s mobile users. Additionally, no productized solution has existed for the synchronization of unstructured data that is shared between the cloud and the device.

Couchbase Mobile changes all that.

Couchbase Mobile delivers a solution that enables mobile app developers to meet the demand for always-available, always-responsive mobile applications. Couchbase Mobile includes three components: Couchbase Lite, Couchbase Sync Gateway and Couchbase Server. Taken together, these products provide mobile application developers with a powerful, new platform for creating robust and network-independent applications, simplifying the code needed to manage data synchronization and considerably reducing time to market.

“We welcome Couchbase Lite as a smart solution to address the needs of mobile developers building applications that rely on data synchronization and intermittent connectivity,” said Jon Udell, Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc.  “We have been using Couchbase Lite in Thali, an experiment to determine through open source prototypes what it takes to make the web truly peer-to-peer. Thali uses Couchbase Lite as a key component of its data replication platform.”

Couchbase Mobile Products

  • Couchbase Lite: Couchbase Lite is a full featured, native embedded NoSQL mobile database built from the ground up for mobile. Lightweight in footprint, but delivering all the features of Couchbase Server, along with multi-master replication and conflict resolution. Data is secured during transport and on the device. In its first release, Couchbase Lite has native support for iOS, OSX, Android, Portable Java and Xamarin supported mobile platforms.
  • Couchbase Sync Gateway: Couchbase Sync Gateway enables replication between Couchbase Lite on a mobile device and Couchbase Server in the cloud. In addition to replication, Sync Gateway handles user authentication, access control, data filtering, and data change validation
  • Couchbase Server: For mobile applications that sync data with the cloud, Couchbase Server provides the most complete, most scalable NoSQL database built on a flexible JSON model. Couchbase Server makes it easy to modify applications without the constraints of a fixed database schema and delivers sub-millisecond, high-throughput reads and writes. Couchbase Server is easy to scale out, and supports topology changes with no downtime.

Couchbase Mobile Eco-System Quickly Forming

Further supporting rapid development and deployment of mobile applications, Couchbase is working with several cross platform development tool providers to deliver out of the box support for Couchbase Lite on the major mobile platforms: iOS, Android and .NET.

Xamarin

Xamarin provides a native mobile application development platform that enables developers to write fully native mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows in C#, sharing business logic, data access, networking code and other app logic code across device platforms.  Xamarin supports 100% of each device platforms APIs.  The result is native mobile apps with native interfaces that are built and maintained more efficiently thanks to code-sharing and reuse. In addition to announcing general availability of Couchbase Mobile, Couchbase also announced today the beta version of Couchbase Lite for .NET (LINK). Co-developed by Couchbase and Xamarin, Couchbase Lite for .NET gives the more than 600,000 developers using Xamarin a powerful new infrastructure to accelerate time to develop native mobile applications.

PhoneGap

PhoneGap is an open source development framework that provides a container for developers to wrap apps in, making it fast and easy to build mobile apps using the most popular web technologies: HTML, CSS and Javascript. The Couchbase Lite Plug-in for PhoneGap enables developers to build cross-platform mobile apps that are powered by Couchbase Lite by using PhoneGap and standard web technologies (HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript).  Developers simply build their Couchbase Lite powered mobile app, wrap it in a PhoneGap container, and then build executables for iOS and Android devices from the same code base.

“We no longer live in the pre-mobile world. Companies are moving to a mobile first mindset and enterprise IT is being called on to support that,” said Lyn Robison, Data Management Strategies Research Vice President, Gartner.  “But mobile application development teams have been challenged by a lack of infrastructure products at the data layer. A native mobile database with integrated sync will significantly reduce the hurdles faced by mobile application developers in today’s enterprise, allowing them to deliver apps that deliver business value all the time, with or without a connection.”

Couchbase Announces Beta Version of Couchbase Lite for .NET

Mountain View, Calif. – May 21, 2014 – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, today announced the beta release of Couchbase Lite for .NET, jointly developed with Xamarin.  Couchbase Lite is the world’s first and only full featured, flexible, mobile JSON database that runs locally on the device and is built from the ground up for mobile devices. In addition to the beta release of Couchbase Lite for .NET, Couchbase also announced (LINK) general availability of Couchbase mobile, which includes native versions of Couchbase Lite for iOS, Android and Java.

“Our goal is to enable developers to build the next generation of mobile applications,” said Rahim Yaseen, SVP Products and Engineering, Couchbase.  “Xamarin has a community of more than 600,000 developers building native mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows in C#.  Building a native .NET version of Couchbase Lite gives that community a faster, easier way to handle mobile data synchronization, eliminating one of the biggest challenges to building always-available, always-responsive applications.”

The beta release of Couchbase Lite for .NET is a joint development effort between Couchbase and Xamarin. Xamarin and Couchbase will continue joint development through the beta and expect to make the product generally available in the fall of 2014.  In addition, Xamarin and Couchbase are collaborating to make the code portable to run on iOS and Android via Xamarin as well as on popular Microsoft mobile, tablet, and desktop platforms.

“Xamarin’s mission is to make it fast, easy and fun to build great mobile apps,” said Miguel de Icaza, co-founder and CTO, Xamarin.  “Trying to write code to manage remote data synchronization is not fun.  Couchbase Mobile products, and specifically Couchbase Lite for .NET, give our developer community a platform to write more robust, responsive and available applications in a fraction of the time it used to take.  We are thrilled to be providing the beta version of Couchbase Lite for .NET to our developer community.”

The beta version of Couchbase Lite for .NET is available here.

Global companies are driving this explosive market growth as they look for database technology that can support the scalability, reliability and high-performance requirements of highly interactive, mission-critical applications. These companies, including Amadeus, AOL, Orbitz, PayPal, Salesforce.com and Viber, continuously select Couchbase Server to support their enterprise-grade NoSQL deployments.

“Couchbase Server is the only NoSQL database fit to provide the scalability and performance that mission-critical enterprise applications require,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase. “This product advantage gives us a huge market opportunity and we are delighted to have Doug join our management team at this pivotal time. His experience establishing market leadership for top-tier startups will be critical to our success during this hyper-growth period.”

Laird is experienced at building leadership positions for high-growth companies in emerging categories. Prior to Couchbase Laird was at Wildfire, where he served as CMO for its rapidly growing social media marketing business through the company’s acquisition by Google for a reported $400 million. Prior to that, Laird served as Vice President of Global Marketing at QlikTech, where he created a new Business Intelligence category, termed Business Discovery. Gartner endorsed the category and recognized QlikTech as the innovative leader. The new positioning was instrumental in helping drive a three-year increase in annual revenue from $80 million to $321 million and one of the best performing technology IPOs of the 2010. Laird also led corporate marketing at Siebel contributing to the high growth period when sales grew from $410 million to 1.8 billion.

“The NoSQL market is evolving into two distinct segments – small, grassroots developer-led projects, and business-critical applications that require massive scale,” said Laird. “Market success is no longer defined by the number of downloads and LinkedIn skill counts, but by the ability to support mission critical applications. Mountain View, CA – February 11, 2014 – Couchbase, the fastest-growing provider of enterprise class NoSQL databases and technologies, has released Couchbase Server 2.5 Enterprise Edition. The release, available today, includes capabilities for enterprise-grade performance, including new features such as Rack Awareness for high availability and cross data center (XDCR) data encryption for secure data center replication.

“Enterprises requiring the highest scalability and availability are consistently choosing Couchbase over traditional databases and other NoSQL vendors,” said Rahim Yaseen, Senior Vice President, Couchbase. “With the Rack Awareness and data encryption capabilities included in Couchbase Server 2.5 Enterprise Edition, we continue to establish Couchbase as the clear choice for global enterprises requiring high availability, reliability and security.”

High Availability with Rack Awareness

To ensure enterprise-class availability and reliability, master data and replicated data should be stored on different server racks. Couchbase Server 2.5 Enterprise Edition’s newly introduced Rack Awareness provides a simple, flexible and effective solution for data replication that is easy to scale and administer. With Couchbase Rack Awareness, the user can create logical groupings of Couchbase Server nodes and replica copies of the data are automatically distributed across server nodes located on different racks. This intelligent data replication ensures that data is secure despite disruptions such as power outages, or switch or rack failure.

Rack Awareness is especially needed for applications running on public clouds, such as Amazon EC2, where customers have no control over infrastructure availability and uptime. With Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition 2.5, customers running applications on a public cloud can leverage Rack Awareness to ensure that replica data is stored on separate zones to maintain 24/7 application uptime.

Using Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition 2.5 Rack Awareness, you can now create logical server groups based on your physical server topology for significantly higher reliability in case of rack or zone failures.

Secure Cross Data Center Replication

One of the most compelling features delivered in Couchbase Server 2.0 was the addition of Cross Data Center Replication (XDCR). XDCR delivers high performance by storing data closer to a users’ physical location, and increases application reliability by operating in multiple data centers.

Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition 2.5 builds on the existing XDCR functionality with advanced, secure data encryption. In the absence of a virtual private network (VPN), data sent between networks is typically sent over a wide area network (WAN). Data moving across a WAN is vulnerable unless it is encrypted. With Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition 2.5, data can be transmitted using SSL encryption between data centers. This new layer of security helps enterprises achieve global scale in a secure manner.

Couchbase for the Enterprise

More and more global companies are finding that only Couchbase provides the high availability, scalability and performance they need to move from grassroots NoSQL projects, to large mission-critical, deployments. For example, due to scalability issues with their initial NoSQL deployment, a large messaging company recently replaced MongoDB with Couchbase (see related video here). With its newest release, Couchbase Server Enterprise Edition 2.5, Couchbase is providing more functionality for large enterprises to confidently make the transition to NoSQL.

With 400 percent growth and customers including AOL, PayPal, Viber, Network Rail, Concur and Orbitz, Couchbase is quickly becoming the leader for enterprise-class NoSQL databases, because Couchbase scales easier, faster and further, delivering high-performance, 24/7/365 availability and reduced cost of administration.

Viber Chooses Couchbase to Support High Scalability Applications for Hundreds of Millions of Users

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – February 4, 2014 – Viber, one of the fastest–growing messaging and VoIP services in the world and driver of billions of messages every month, today announced it has chosen Couchbase, the most scalable and fastest-growing NoSQL technology provider.

Viber Replaces MongoDB with Couchbase for High Scalability

Viber’s always-on technology enables hundreds of millions of users to connect in 32 languages worldwide in the three years since its initial launch. To support its high volume and influx of data, Viber has integrated Couchbase as its scalable database solution. Viber previously deployed MongoDB’s NoSQL database technology.

“We found that MongoDB’s NoSQL technology could not adequately support the company’s growing data management needs,” said Amir Ish-Shalom, systems architect at Viber. “After investigating multiple database technologies such as Cassandra and Amazon’s DynamoDB, including more combinations of database plus caching layers, we deployed Couchbase. With Couchbase, we’re now able to handle hundreds of thousands of ops-per-second – an order of magnitude more than our previous solution.”

“Couchbase has an easy and transparent sharding and scaling model, something the previous solution lacked. We were impressed with Couchbase’s powerful and easy to administer sharding for load balancing and scaling,” added Ish-Shalom. “Couchbase was able to provide several times more throughput using less than half the number of nodes. Plus, Couchbase has a unique and innovative consolidation of cache and database tiers, something that made Couchbase’s architecture very appealing.”

“Over the last year we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of Internet companies and enterprises deploying NoSQL technology under large-scale mission-critical applications, said Couchbase CEO Bob Wiederhold.  “These applications require the highest level of scalability, performance, and reliability. This is exactly where Couchbase has been successful with its enterprise customers like PayPal, Amadeus, Orbitz, and now Viber. While large enterprises like Viber adopted MongoDB’s technology as a first-generation NoSQL approach to managing their data, we are steadily seeing those enterprises transition to Couchbase to provide them with the superior solution needed to scale their data and their businesses.”

Amir Ish-Shalom, systems architect at Viber, will deliver a keynote presentation on the company’s transition to Couchbase NoSQL technology at Couchbase [TLV], an international NoSQL user conference in Tel Aviv, Israel on Tuesday, February 4, 2014.
