“With Couchbase, we can review all sorts of data analytics in milliseconds to offer fans options to help them enjoy the game more, including the ‘nasty factor’ of pitches, which we push to fans instantaneously. The functionality we’ve built with Couchbase allows us to do things at speed, in real-time with analytics in the background at the same time that older technologies could never do. Our future is bright for engaging with fans in ways we haven’t in the past.”
–Steven Wyant, Data Architect, Cincinnati Reds

“Enterprises continue to possess an insatiable appetite for analytics and that includes carrying out analytics on operational data, often referred to as hybrid workloads. Couchbase’s new Analytics Service is an example of such a system targeting hybrid workloads, giving enterprises the opportunity to react quickly to incoming operational data.”
–James Curtis, Senior Analyst, Data Platforms and Analytics, 451 Research

“For years, Couchbase has been helping enterprises run operations of massive scale by providing database infrastructure all the way from the edge to the cloud. Today, with the new Analytics Service in Couchbase Server 6.0, enterprises can get operational and analytical capabilities within one database platform under one programming model, N1QL, an extension of SQL. Now enterprises can find insights on what to change in their operations and what to change to–in real time. The unique way in which this is done eliminates the complex and time-consuming ETL process, which substantially reduces both the ‘path to insight’ as well as ‘total time to insight.’”
–Ravi Mayuram, CTO and Senior Vice President of Engineering, Couchbase

Couchbase Server 6.0 will be generally available in the 4th calendar quarter of 2018.

Couchbase Announces First Commercial Implementation of SQL++ with N1QL for Analytics

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Couchbase Connect SV, September 19, 2018– Couchbase, Inc., creator of the world’s first Engagement Database, today announced another first with the launch of N1QL for Analytics, the industry’s first commercial query language implementation compatible with the SQL++ language framework. SQL++ specifies how to create principled, next generation query languages that bring together the full power of SQL with the flexibility of JSON, helping advance the adoption of document-oriented data and the JSON data format. The development of the SQL++ framework began nearly a decade ago as UC San Diego’s NSF-funded FORWARD project with subsequent contributions and funding from Couchbase and Informatica, and support from UC Irvine and UC Riverside.

As the first commercial implementation of the SQL++ framework, Couchbase N1QL for Analytics serves as the query language for the new Analytics Service that was also announced today as part of the latest release of the Couchbase Data Platform. As a language deriving from SQL++, Couchbase N1QL for Analytics is easy to learn, especially for developers who are familiar with the syntax of SQL due to the similarities. With developers not having to “learn from scratch,” adoption of semi-structured and NoSQL databases by enterprises with existing investments in relational systems becomes a much simpler process.

The road to SQL++ began nearly a decade ago when the limitations of SQL, the most common database query language, were realized, as SQL does not provide a complete and efficient solution for querying JSON or semi-structured data in JSON form. Semi-structured data accounts for 85% of all business data and will continue to grow as machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) gain momentum.

To address this gap, Couchbase developed N1QL to provide a comprehensive query language that combines the query power of SQL with the flexibility of JSON data, while independently, UC San Diego’s Computer Science and Engineering Professor, Yannis Papakonstantinou, and his team developed SQL++, a formally-defined, declarative language framework for semi-structured data, specifying a range of possibilities for future languages. Also contributing to the advancement of SQL++ was the NSF-funded AsterixDB project with contributions from UC Irvine and UC Riverside, led by UCI professor Mike Carey. AsterixDB initially had its own query language, AQL, but has now embraced SQL++.

Click to tweet: #Couchbase Announces First Commercial Implementation of SQL++ with #N1QL for #Analytics https://bit.ly/2pf8ne0

To learn more about SQL++, download the latest book by Don Chamberlin, one of the principal designers of the original SQL language specification, titled, SQL++ for SQL Users: A Tutorial. Attendees of Couchbase Connect SV this week will receive a complimentary copy for Chamberlin to sign during the closing reception.

“With the SQL++ framework you can make a declarative query language that queries semistructured data, like JSON, while drawing on SQL. Couchbase N1QL for Analytics aligns with the SQL++ framework and the requirements of querying semi-structured data. It is a query language for the new era of big data, because it operates on semi-structured data but is fully declarative, as SQL is, giving you the best of both worlds.”
–Yannis Papakonstantinou, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, UC San Diego

“It’s been very exciting to be part of the community that has been driving the future language of the NoSQL world, and it’s equally exciting to see the fruits of those efforts – especially with the first commercial implementation of SQL++ being derived from the Apache AsterixDB query engine. Since the turn of the millennium, enterprises have been asking for declarative queries on semi-structured data. And today, it’s here.”
–Mike Carey, Bren Professor, UC Irvine

“We started the journey to develop a SQL for JSON some four years ago. Our mission was to not develop yet another query language, but preserve and advance one of the most important contributions of the relational systems: SQL for flexible data model in JSON. We called it N1QL, which is short for non-1st normal form query language – essentially for JSON. Hundreds of enterprises have developed mission critical apps using N1QL and got the attention of like minded academics and database experts. With the launch of N1QL for Analytics, we have advanced and refined N1QL to be the first commercially available implementation of SQL++.”
–Ravi Mayuram, SVP of Engineering and CTO, Couchbase

Couchbase Launches First NoSQL Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—August 30, 2018Couchbase Inc., creator of the world’s first Engagement Database, today announced the launch of the first NoSQL autonomous operator for Kubernetes. Now available, the Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes is an application-specific controller that vastly reduces complexity, human error and manual management of database services, resulting in streamlined operations, more efficient consumption of resources and cloud portability.

Couchbase Autonomous Operator extends the Kubernetes API to create, configure and manage instances of complex stateful applications on behalf of a Kubernetes user. It builds upon the basic Kubernetes resource and controller concepts, but also includes domain or application-specific knowledge to automate common tasks better managed by computers. Whether an enterprise is using a single-provider, hybrid cloud or cross-cloud strategy, Couchbase Autonomous Operator is deployment agnostic, thereby enabling multicloud deployment and migration seamlessly.

As Kubernetes continues to gain momentum and IT organizations increasingly adopt cloud computing and embrace newer technologies like microservices, mobile, IoT and more, Couchbase identified the following key roadblocks that hinder progress:

  • High operational costs: Manually deploying and managing hundreds of database instances across multiple geographies increases cost, effort and complexity.
  • Vendor lock-in: A lack of standardization to ensure data can be moved freely and safely between cloud providers has made it difficult to switch providers quickly or work with multiple providers.
  • Delayed time to market: Customers with applications using microservice architectures have difficulties managing and scaling database clusters in siloed systems, extending development times and making it harder to support their applications.

The Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes was built to address and overcome these challenges for the enterprise by providing:

  • Automated operations: Beta users report reductions of up to 95 percent of the operational complexity, which lowers operational costs.
  • Cloud-agnostic deployment and management: Offers enterprise customers with multicloud strategies the ability to deploy, manage and move their applications to and from any cloud, at any time.
  • Unmatched agility and flexibility: Allows customers who have adopted microservice architectures to run their database next to their application, reducing the DevOps cycle and decreasing time to market.

“As a software engineer, one of the things I am least excited about is managing shell scripts. The Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes alleviates that pain and completely automates management of Couchbase on our Kubernetes cluster. It’s a game changer.”
–David Downey, Software Developer, BD Global Health

“The Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes is a marvelous addition to the Couchbase ecosystem, reducing our IT administration overhead by at least 80 percent. It sets the bar for all other clustered databases in any cloud environment.”
–Brant Burnett, Systems Architect, CenterEdge

“Couchbase is collaborating with Red Hat to bring the benefits of the Operator Framework to applications like the Couchbase Data Platform. With Couchbase’s distributed NoSQL database on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, customers have even more options to provide modern application portability across hybrid and multicloud environments. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is a strategic deployment platform for the Couchbase Autonomous Operator, which is now available in the Red Hat Container Catalog registry.”
–Jack Baratta, Senior Director, Global ISVs and Alliances

“The Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes sets a new standard for Kubernetes in production deployments. For the first time, a fully distributed, scalable, enterprise-class database that can be orchestrated by Kubernetes is generally available to enterprises wishing to automate the deployment, monitoring, scaling and managing of database applications both on-premises and in public cloud environments seamlessly. By automating these traditionally manually intensive services, enterprises can significantly compress their ‘time to market.’”
–Ravi Mayuram, SVP of Engineering and CTO, Couchbase

Couchbase Research Reveals Organizations Risk Wasting an Average of $28 Million on Digital Projects as Pressure to Transform Mounts

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif – Aug 14, 2018 – Organizations risk wasting millions of dollars in the next 12 months as they rush into flawed digital projects, research from Couchbase has found. In the survey of 450 heads of digital transformation in enterprises across the US, UK, France and Germany, 52 percent said a fixation on digital transformation had raised the risk of rushing into ill-thought-out projects, meaning that much of their average planned spend of $28 million in the next 12 months could be wasted. This risk of rushing in is being driven by mounting pressure to transform: 85 percent of respondents said disruption in their industry has accelerated over the past 12 months, and 86 percent believe businesses will have to adapt to providing digital services in the next 12 months, or accept they will become less relevant. However, businesses that can adapt to this pressure can show significant success: 6 percent have completely revolutionized digital experience to the extent it’s now unique in their industry.

Other findings include:

  • 95 percent of respondents believe that digital transformation can seem an insurmountable task – meaning projects are more likely to be unsuccessful
  • Organizations spent an average of $24 million on digital transformation projects in the last 12 months
  • 35 percent say the primary driver for digital transformation is advances made by competitors, 23 percent changes in regulation, and 19 percent pressure from customers – meaning digital transformation is mostly being driven by reactive needs, instead of proactive ideas
  • Businesses have limited time to get this right: 64 percent believe those that can’t keep up with digital innovations will go out of business or be absorbed by a competitor in fewer than four years
  • There are personal consequences of failed digital projects: 83 percent of respondents said they would face being fired if a project fails
  • Despite these pressures, organizations are not standing still: 25 percent have either completely revolutionized (6 percent) or transformed (19 percent) digital experience in the last year, compared to 15 percent in 2017

Click to Tweet: Organizations Risk Wasting an Average of $28 Million on Digital Projects as Pressure to Transform Mounts, new #Couchbase report shows http://bit.ly/2w018JS

“We are entering the era of the massively interactive enterprise where every part of an organization, from sales and marketing, to HR, finance and logistics, is built around engaging digital experiences,” said Matt Cain, CEO of Couchbase. “The revolutionary potential of digital transformation will have a hugely positive impact for those organizations that can do it well. However, the pressure to transform at speed means organizations have a higher risk of taking a rushed, reactive approach, driven by the fear that the organization will lose relevance, that results in substandard experiences and wasted investments. Transformation is not a destination. It’s a continuous process that, at its best, is proactive, driven by the needs of the business as a whole, and underpinned by the right data infrastructure. By adopting this approach, and not letting the pressure faze them, organizations can join the ranks of the leading 25 percent.”

Digital transformation has been mostly driven by the IT function: 76 percent of organizations rank it in the top three business functions driving their digital transformation in the last five years. Business executives also have a substantial say, with 47 percent placing them in the top three. However, other functions are far less represented, suggesting that transformation is still seen as the domain of IT instead of something that should concern the entire organization.

Digital transformation is also still being held back by technology. Eighty-eight percent of organizations have had a digital project fail, reduce in scope, or suffer significant delays because their legacy database couldn’t support it. Indeed, this reliance on legacy databases and competing priorities has raised a number of issues, including:

  • 87 percent of organizations find they have to scale back ambitions for new applications and services so that they will work with IoT or mobile devices – since these devices cannot match the data processing power of larger servers, and cannot guarantee a consistent connection
  • Only 29 percent of organizations say they can use data in real-time, limiting the end-user experience and the types of services they can offer
  • 74 percent of organizations rely so heavily on their legacy databases that they cannot adopt newer database technology as quickly as they would like
  • 83 percent of respondents are under increased pressure to secure their organizations’ database – laying bare the threats organizations face and taking attention away from transforming new services

“Data is at the heart of the massively interactive enterprise,” continued Matt Cain. “Customer and employee-facing, and even machine-to-machine, applications need to access the right data, in real-time, even when there is limited access to a central server. This doesn’t necessarily mean organizations should simply throw out their legacy technology and start over. However, they do need to ensure that they have the right data architecture for their needs. One that can handle sudden changes in direction, that can perform at scale, and that is secure. With the right technology at hand, organizations will be ready to weather the growing pressure and take part in a real digital revolution.”
