Couchbase Named a Leader in the Big Data NoSQL Database Evaluation by Independent Research Firm

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — March 14, 2019Couchbase today announced that Forrester Research Inc. recognized the company as a Leader in its report ‘The Forrester Wave™: Big Data NoSQL, Q1 2019.’  Forrester identified the 15 most significant companies in the category and evaluated them against 26 criteria. Couchbase received the top scores possible in the ability to execute, open source, technical support, market awareness, and reach criteria in this Forrester Wave™ report.

According to the report, “[NoSQL] has gone from supporting simple schemaless apps to becoming a mission-critical data platform for large Fortune 1000 companies. It has already

disrupted the database market, which was dominated for decades by relational database vendors. Today, half of global data and analytics technology decision makers either have implemented or are implementing NoSQL platforms, taking advantage of the benefits of a flexible database that serves a broad range of use cases.”

The report also cites that, “Couchbase has a high-performance and scalable NoSQL offering. Couchbase is designed to provide easy-to-scale key-value or document storage, processing and access with low-latency requirements. Firms use Couchbase to support massively-interactive use cases, some of which include social and mobile/IoT applications, healthcare, financial services, content and metadata stores, eCommerce, and online gaming applications. Couchbase provides full support for documents, a flexible data model, indexing, full-text search, and MapReduce for real-time analytics. Customers use Couchbase to support various mission-critical workloads, including operational, analytical, and mixed workloads.”

“NoSQL is enabling a fundamental market transition in databases that will prove to be one of the most impactful in all of technology and digital transformation. Couchbase continues its maniacal focus on differentiated innovation, scoring the highest marks possible in multiple categories within the Forrester report,” said Matt Cain, President and CEO of Couchbase. “Couchbase was built on a foundation that enables us to be the most powerful NoSQL database for business-critical applications.  We are proud of the success we bring to our customers by helping them solve their most complex data and application challenges.  We are equally proud to be recognized as a Leader in the Forrester Wave™ report.”

“Infosys partners closely with Couchbase to power new digital transformation initiatives at our Fortune 1000 clients,” said Gautam Khanna, VP, Head – Modernization Practice, Infosys. “As an independent global systems integrator, we rely not only on our technical expertise within the open source and NoSQL sectors, but also consider third party industry research when making architectural recommendations to our clients. Couchbase’s recognition as a leader in the Forrester Wave™ report supports our observations and experiences with Couchbase when deploying solutions at our mutual customers.”

Click & Collect platform Doddle is expanding into the U.S. this year, leveraging the power of Couchbase. In the United Kingdom, Doddle’s Click & Collect technology is already used by many of the leading retailers such as Debenhams and grocers like Morrisons. Doddle uses Couchbase to underpin their mobile based service providing a great customer experience even when offline.

“Couchbase allows us to innovate at speed and run a highly reliable platform at scale,” said Gary O’Connor CTO at Doddle. “We’re always looking for ways to better serve our customers, and Couchbase is foundational technology that enables us to offer a superior customer experience.”

New Book “Couchbase On Kubernetes” Discusses How to Autonomously Run and Manage a Complex Distributed Database On Kubernetes

SEATTLE–December 13, 2018– KubeCon +CloudNativeCon North America, Booth S12Couchbase, creator of the world’s first Engagement Database, today announced the publication and immediate availability of Couchbase on Kubernetes: Autonomously Run and Manage a Complex Distributed Database on Kubernetes.

Authored by Couchbase Director of Product Management Anil Kumar, the book details how to autonomously run and manage Couchbase on Kubernetes to reduce complexity, human error and manual management of database services. As Kubernetes continues to gain momentum there are a number of roadblocks that can hinder progress, and Kumar’s book helps readers overcome obstacles including high operational costs, vendor lock-in and delayed time to market.

“Kubernetes has the ability to streamline operations and provide a more efficient consumption of resources and cloud portability, but to date it has really only been accessible to highly technical users,” said Kumar. “The aim of my book is to explain simply and clearly how less technical users can get started with Kubernetes, and how to build on basic Kubernetes resource and controller concepts with Couchbase Autonomous Operator, the first NoSQL autonomous operator for Kubernetes.”

The book explains:

  • How users can leverage Couchbase Autonomous Operator to extend the Kubernetes API to create, configure and manage instances of complex stateful applications
  • How to leverage Kubernetes across multicloud deployments
  • How to deliver automated operations and cloud-agnostic deployments with unmatched agility and flexibility through Couchbase Autonomous Operator

In addition, Don Chamberlin, co-inventor of SQL, recently published SQL++ For SQL Users: a Tutorial in collaboration with Couchbase. Earlier this year, Couchbase launched Couchbase N1QL for Analytics, the first commercial implementation of the SQL++ query language.

“SQL++ has been a decade in the making, and is essential to leverage semi-structured data for analytics,” said Chamberlin.”It addresses gaps in SQL’s ability to query JSON and maintains the syntax of SQL for ease of use. This book details best practices for the next generation query language, which combines the benefits of SQL with the flexibility of JSON.”

Both N1QL and Couchbase Autonomous Operator represent major advancements in the industry and are helping to shape the future of databases and query languages. Attendees of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America this week can meet with Couchbase to receive a free copy of Couchbase on Kubernetes at booth S12. Paperback and Kindle copies of the Couchbase on Kubernetes and SQL++ For SQL Users: A Tutorial are available for purchase on Amazon.com.

The functionality we’ve built with Couchbase allows us to do things at speed, in real-time with analytics in the background at the same time that older technologies could never do. Our future is bright for engaging with fans in ways we haven’t in the past.”
–Steven Wyant, Data Architect, Cincinnati Reds

“Enterprises continue to possess an insatiable appetite for analytics and that includes carrying out analytics on operational data, often referred to as hybrid workloads. Couchbase’s new Analytics Service is an example of such a system targeting hybrid workloads, giving enterprises the opportunity to react quickly to incoming operational data.”
–James Curtis, Senior Analyst, Data Platforms and Analytics, 451 Research

“For years, Couchbase has been helping enterprises run operations of massive scale by providing database infrastructure all the way from the edge to the cloud. Today, with the new Analytics Service in Couchbase Server 6.0, enterprises can get operational and analytical capabilities within one database platform under one programming model, N1QL, an extension of SQL. Now enterprises can find insights on what to change in their operations and what to change to–in real time. The unique way in which this is done eliminates the complex and time-consuming ETL process, which substantially reduces both the ‘path to insight’ as well as ‘total time to insight.’”
–Ravi Mayuram, CTO and Senior Vice President of Engineering, Couchbase

Couchbase Server 6.0 will be generally available in the 4th calendar quarter of 2018.

SQL++ specifies how to create principled, next generation query languages that bring together the full power of SQL with the flexibility of JSON, helping advance the adoption of document-oriented data and the JSON data format. The development of the SQL++ framework began nearly a decade ago as UC San Diego’s NSF-funded FORWARD project with subsequent contributions and funding from Couchbase and Informatica, and support from UC Irvine and UC Riverside.

As the first commercial implementation of the SQL++ framework, Couchbase N1QL for Analytics serves as the query language for the new Analytics Service that was also announced today as part of the latest release of the Couchbase Data Platform. As a language deriving from SQL++, Couchbase N1QL for Analytics is easy to learn, especially for developers who are familiar with the syntax of SQL due to the similarities. With developers not having to “learn from scratch,” adoption of semi-structured and NoSQL databases by enterprises with existing investments in relational systems becomes a much simpler process.

The road to SQL++ began nearly a decade ago when the limitations of SQL, the most common database query language, were realized, as SQL does not provide a complete and efficient solution for querying JSON or semi-structured data in JSON form. Semi-structured data accounts for 85% of all business data and will continue to grow as machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) gain momentum.

To address this gap, Couchbase developed N1QL to provide a comprehensive query language that combines the query power of SQL with the flexibility of JSON data, while independently, UC San Diego’s Computer Science and Engineering Professor, Yannis Papakonstantinou, and his team developed SQL++, a formally-defined, declarative language framework for semi-structured data, specifying a range of possibilities for future languages. Also contributing to the advancement of SQL++ was the NSF-funded AsterixDB project with contributions from UC Irvine and UC Riverside, led by UCI professor Mike Carey. AsterixDB initially had its own query language, AQL, but has now embraced SQL++.

To learn more about SQL++, download the latest book by Don Chamberlin, one of the principal designers of the original SQL language specification, titled, SQL++ for SQL Users: A Tutorial. Attendees of Couchbase Connect SV this week will receive a complimentary copy for Chamberlin to sign during the closing reception.

“With the SQL++ framework you can make a declarative query language that queries semistructured data, like JSON, while drawing on SQL. Couchbase N1QL for Analytics aligns with the SQL++ framework and the requirements of querying semi-structured data. It is a query language for the new era of big data, because it operates on semi-structured data but is fully declarative, as SQL is, giving you the best of both worlds.”
–Yannis Papakonstantinou, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, UC San Diego

“It’s been very exciting to be part of the community that has been driving the future language of the NoSQL world, and it’s equally exciting to see the fruits of those efforts – especially with the first commercial implementation of SQL++ being derived from the Apache AsterixDB query engine. Since the turn of the millennium, enterprises have been asking for declarative queries on semi-structured data. And today, it’s here.”
–Mike Carey, Bren Professor, UC Irvine

“We started the journey to develop a SQL for JSON some four years ago. Our mission was to not develop yet another query language, but preserve and advance one of the most important contributions of the relational systems: SQL for flexible data model in JSON. We called it N1QL, which is short for non-1st normal form query language – essentially for JSON. Hundreds of enterprises have developed mission critical apps using N1QL and got the attention of like minded academics and database experts. With the launch of N1QL for Analytics, we have advanced and refined N1QL to be the first commercially available implementation of SQL++.”
