Couchbase Introduces Couchbase Capella, the Enterprise-Class NoSQL DBaaS for the Multicloud Era

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 4, 2020Couchbase, the creator of the enterprise-class, multicloud to edge NoSQL database, today introduced Couchbase Cloud, a fully-managed Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS). Couchbase Cloud enables enterprises to host their data within their own Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) for greater control and ownership, and pay for only what they use. Customers can now experience best-in-class performance and availability from the most powerful NoSQL database technology available to the market as a fully managed service. With this announcement, Couchbase becomes the first SQL-on-NoSQL DBaaS that supports multiple cloud providers. The service will launch this summer on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, followed by Google Cloud Platform. Early access is available by registering here

The Architectural Difference: Greater Control and Ownership
A key difference between Couchbase Cloud and other DBaaS solutions is the separation of the control plane and data plane, resulting in more flexibility and better economics.

  • Data plane resides in Customer’s VPC: Customers have full control of their data together with a host of other benefits including higher performance, lower latency, and stronger security.
  • “Single pane of glass” control plane for multicloud management: Built on the latest in cloud innovation, including open source technologies Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Grafana, the fully automated control plane is used to conduct activities such as multicloud orchestration (where users can manage and deploy clusters across multiple clouds from one single view), user management, cluster management, monitoring, and billing–all from a single interface.

Cost Performant: Flexible Procurement Options to Optimize TCO

Couchbase Cloud decouples DBaaS from the underlying cloud infrastructure, which enables customers to purchase IaaS directly from their Cloud Service Provider and leverage reserved instance pricing to optimize total cost of ownership.

Couchbase Cloud also provides users with flexible packaging options to optimize solution costs based on business requirements. One option is on-demand hourly pricing, and another is the ability to purchase Couchbase Credits that can be used over a one year period. The use of credits is fully flexible with no usage limitations during the one year period.

The Couchbase Difference: Best-In-Class Availability Within Any Cloud

Couchbase Cloud offers best-in-class availability that is unique to Couchbase Server. Thanks to its powerful cross datacenter replication (XDCR) capability, Couchbase is able to distribute across public cloud regions in an active-active configuration while providing data locality and disaster recovery. Built on the most powerful NoSQL technology, Couchbase Server delivers unparalleled performance at scale, in any cloud. With features like memory-first architecture and multidimensional scaling, Couchbase Server excels at supporting business-critical applications at scale while maintaining submillisecond latencies and 99.999% availability. Plus, with the most comprehensive SQL-compatible query language (N1QL), indexing, full-text search, eventing, analytics and support for multi-document ACID transactions, among other services, Couchbase Server offers the broadest range of capabilities to enable application modernization and migration from RDBMS.

Early Access Program

Couchbase will be running an early access program this spring. For more information on the product or to sign up for the invite-only early access program, please register here.

“We are just now beginning to see people thinking about moving classic on-prem applications to the cloud. When that happens, substantial redevelopment is necessary, especially if the application is to be cloud native. With that level of change, all the components come into question, including the database management system, and there is greater openness to changing that technology than we have seen before. In this respect, Couchbase’s timing is just right. The market is ready for a fully managed, enterprise-class NoSQL database built for a multicloud environment.”
— Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, IDC

“As enterprises continue to move their applications to the public cloud to increase business agility, they are looking for enterprise-class solutions that can deliver on their business-critical application requirements.  These requirements include security, high availability, reliability, manageability, performance at scale, and more. And in not just one cloud, but in multiple clouds, across clouds, and in hybrid cloud configurations. Working closely with our enterprise customers over the past two years, we’ve designed a fully-managed Database-as-a-Service offering that meets their most stringent requirements, leveraging the latest generation of open source technologies while retaining all the value of self-managed Couchbase Server, to deliver a uniquely powerful and differentiated offering to the market.”

Couchbase Mobile Wins 2020 BIG Innovation Award

SANTA CLARA, Calif., January 22, 2020Couchbase today announced it has been named a winner in the 2020 BIG Innovation Awards presented by the Business Intelligence Group.

Couchbase, the creator of the enterprise-class, multicloud to edge NoSQL database that drives the operations of more than 30% of the Fortune 100, was recognized for outstanding innovation in mobile technology. As enterprises look to accelerate the innovation of their enterprise critical applications, they rely on Couchbase’s cloud-native distributed database architecture that combines the best of NoSQL with the power and familiarity of SQL– all in a single, elegant platform spanning from any cloud to the edge.

Couchbase Mobile extends the power of Couchbase Server to the edge of the network with an embedded NoSQL database solution that powers mobile and non-mobile embedded platforms and a data sync solution that is scalable, flexible and performant to meet the needs of a broad range of offline-first applications.

Couchbase Mobile has been on the forefront of embedded database and sync technology, delivering a host of innovative industry-first features including Predictive Query. Predictive Query allows mobile applications to use trained Machine Learning (ML) models to run predictive queries locally on mobile devices against data stored in Couchbase Mobile. The predictions in the database can then be correlated with predictions made in real-time from device cameras and other local context sources.

In this retail use-case, for example, Predictive Query empowers employees and customers to easily access detailed inventory and product information using their phone’s camera. For instance, a customer may ask an employee, “What shirts do you have that match these pants I’m wearing?” Using a mobile app with Predictive Query, the employee can take a photo of the pants, the query can correlate the image of the pants with the product catalog stored on their phone, and the employee can answer that question like an expert — anytime and anywhere — online or offline. Read more about this capability in this blog post.

The latest version of Couchbase Mobile, version 2.7, became generally available this week and can be downloaded here with details on “What’s New” found here  and product overview here

68 Percent of Digital Architects Say Getting the Right Technology in Place for Transformation an “Insurmountable” Task, Couchbase Research Finds

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Oct 15, 2019 – Digital architects are struggling to satisfy their organizations’ digital transformation ambitions, research from Couchbase has found. In a  survey of 450 heads of digital transformation responsible for managing data architecture at enterprises across the U.S., U.K., France and Germany, 85 percent of respondents were under pressure to deliver digital projects – with 41 percent experiencing “high” or “extremely high” pressure. This is not helped by the apparent scale of the challenge facing architects. Sixty eight percent of respondents said that getting the right technologies in place for digital transformation can seem an insurmountable task, while 80 percent have had to scale back ambitions for new IoT or mobile applications because of challenges with using data. There is a clear need to overcome these challenges as 78 percent of respondents say their organizations have moved beyond planning digital transformation and are actively working on delivering projects.

Against this background, architects are still struggling with their database technology.  Sixty percent of respondents stated that too much of the IT team’s time spent working on digital transformation projects is wasted dealing with legacy technologies. In addition:

  • 90 percent of enterprises rely on legacy relational database technology, 38 percent “heavily.”

  • 72 percent of those relying on legacy databases said these databases limit the organization’s ability to implement digital transformation projects.

  • 79 percent of enterprises are actively planning to reduce their reliance on relational databases – with 56 percent aiming to do so in the next 12 months.

  • At the same time, 74 percent are moving more slowly than they should because they rely heavily on legacy databases for critical applications.

“As digital transformation moves from plans to reality, architects have the critical role of ensuring that business ambitions can be realized,” said Ravi Mayuram, SVP of Engineering and CTO, Couchbase. “In this new era of utility computing powered by the cloud, the architect’s role is even more critical. They have to understand, evaluate and recommend the right technologies and become the essential bridge between the business and developers. They are the ones to future-proof the technology choices that form the foundations of the architecture for digital transformation projects. They are the ones to marry disruptive technologies that are being developed and brought to market with business initiatives that are underway to stay relevant in this modern economy – enabling businesses to transform, compete and win in their markets.”

It is clear that organizations are still heavily invested in their relational databases. Thirty nine percent of enterprises said they continue to use them over newer alternatives because of the architecture built up around the database itself. Thirty percent do not want to retrain or up-skill their staff after already making significant investments, and 29 percent say it would be too complex to replace relational databases. However, capability is less of an issue – only 15 percent don’t trust newer databases with business-critical data or applications. There is also the issue of increasingly sprawling database architecture. Sixty three percent of respondents say their organization is using more databases than it should be, and 20 percent say it’s hard to cope.

While they are facing challenges, there are also signs that data architects, and their organizations, are exploring new ways of deploying databases, and looking to take advantage of transformative technologies. The most commonly supported deployment model for database infrastructure is private cloud (used by 50 percent of enterprises) – followed by fully flexible hybrid cloud (used by 45 percent), on-premises (39 percent) and public cloud (34 percent). Thirty one percent use Database-as-a-Service. When asked what transformative technologies they are using, or plan to use, 80 percent are already using mobile, or plan to use it within the next 12 months. In contrast, 50 percent are using, or will be, edge computing; 42 percent augmented or virtual reality; and 51 percent blockchain. However, respondents are less clear on which technologies will have the most revolutionary impact on digital transformation projects – AI, cloud computing and big data analytics were all similarly rated.

“Taking advantage of new technologies requires new ways of approaching architecture,” continued Mayuram. “Realizing the full potential of modern databases; microservices; AI technologies; and edge computing – such as in mobile apps and IOT –  to name a few, requires serious thinking. Architects are tasked with making the right technology choices and picking the right vendors that will guarantee their initiatives’ success. In this developer-driven economy, architects will lead this digital transformation by evolving the application and system architectures in a responsible manner, whereby businesses can make a quantum leap with minimum disruption.”

Watch report highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URrui9tkXAw

The report is based on an online survey conducted in summer 2019 by Vanson Bourne, an independent market research organization. The survey included 450 heads of digital transformation responsible for digital architecture, such as CIOs, CDOs, and CTOs, in organizations with 1,000 employees or more in the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany.

Couchbase Creates On-Ramp from SQL to NoSQL with Latest Release

SAN FRANCISCO, September 18, 2019 –Oracle OpenWorld, Booth #610Couchbase, the creator of the enterprise-class, multicloud to edge NoSQL database, today announced new features in Couchbase Server that include support for multi-document ACID transactions and a host of query enhancements. Couchbase Server 6.5 will deliver feature parity with SQL and relational database management systems (RDBMS), making it easier for enterprises to develop business-critical applications on Couchbase. Couchbase Server 6.5 is currently in beta and will be generally available this winter.

As enterprises continue to create new applications to maintain competitiveness in a fast-moving digital environment, there is an increased need for a more agile, performant, and scalable database on which these applications are built. With Couchbase Server 6.5, developers already accustomed to working with the SQL open standard can leverage these same skills within a NoSQL environment to address the requirements of today’s web, mobile and IoT applications.

Key highlights of Couchbase Server 6.5 include:

Distributed ACID transactions

While Couchbase Server has always supported single document transactions, Couchbase Server 6.5 will offer distributed ACID transactions across multiple documents and multiple nodes. As a distributed scale-out data platform, Couchbase has a long-standing distinction of being a leader in scalability, performance, and high availability. With multi-document distributed transactions, Couchbase remains true to those tenets. The addition of multi-document distributed transactions allows Couchbase to provide transactions semantics without compromising performance and scale it has always been known for.

Query enhancements

Couchbase Server 6.5 delivers numerous query enhancements, including RDBMS ANSI standard equivalent window functions, which simplify complex queries and reduces code complexity, particularly for financial and statistical reporting. In fact, in a forthcoming report titled Database Query Comparative Analysis, IT consultancy Altoros compares the query capabilities of Couchbase against two other approaches. Across the nine business scenarios Altoros tested against, Altoros found that Couchbase’s declarative approach versus a leading competitor’s procedural approach resulted in significantly less code developers must write when creating applications.

Couchbase also introduces and previews query optimization for NoSQL. The patent-pending cost-based query optimizer, much like in RDBMS, helps developers eliminate time spent on tweaking queries by using a rule-based optimizer to choose the optimal execution plan.

Supporting quotes

“Couchbase is bringing together features of NoSQL with the familiarity and query power of SQL, making it easy for RDBMS developers to adopt and create new applications. So it’s not a matter of either/or, it’s ‘this’ and ‘this.’ Today’s developers are creating a different class of application using the agility of NoSQL, but increasingly find that they also require the integrity and consistency of relational, including support for transactions. Couchbase 6.5 marries SQL and transactions with NoSQL quite nicely.”
–Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, IDC

“Recently, at the latest edition of OpenHack – a hackathon by Infosys, hundreds of our developers experienced Couchbase. The response has been enthusiastic since Couchbase is SQL-based and is easy to learn and develop on. I’m confident that Couchbase’s support for multi-document ACID compliance and several other exciting new features will uncover a broad range of data use cases for our clients.”
–Gautam Khanna, VP and Head, Modernization Practice, Infosys

“When I was introduced to SQL for JSON, I quickly realized I had the flexibility to query with a language that looks 99 percent the same as SQL. So for all of our developers, it was an easy transition. With the new query enhancements planned for 6.5, we are excited to see Couchbase continuing to widen the opportunities for our SQL developers to leverage the promises of NoSQL.”
–Buddhika Rathnayaka, Lead Senior Engineer, American Express

“Today’s market reality is that NoSQL databases are critical for modern business applications. Enterprises are looking to NoSQL databases to provide equivalent relational database functionality that they still depend on. With support for multi-document transactions that we are delivering in 6.5, we are addressing this need whereby Couchbase can be relied on for both NoSQL advantages — schema flexibility, scale and performance– as well as relational database mainstays such as SQL and transactions. Bridging traditional databases to modern NoSQL database in this unique way, Couchbase Server 6.5 will exponentially accelerate application development, delivery, deployment, and scaling.”

Digital Transformation Projects Continue to Be at Risk, Couchbase Research Finds

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sept 4, 2019 – Despite rising optimism in digital transformation, the vast majority of organizations are still suffering failure, delays or scaled back expectations from digital transformation projects, research from Couchbase has found. In the survey of 450 heads of digital transformation in enterprises across the U.S., U.K., France and Germany, 73 percent of organizations have made “significant” or better improvements to the end-user experience in their organization through digital innovation. Twenty-two percent say they have transformed or completely “revolutionized” end-user experience, representing a marked increase over Couchbase’s 2017 survey (15 percent). However, organizations are still experiencing issues meeting their digital ambitions, including:

  • 86 percent said factors including reliance on a legacy technology, complexity of implementing technologies, and lack of resources and skills had prevented them from pursuing a new digital service or other transformation project that their organization wanted

  • 55 percent said that their reliance on relational databases “somewhat” limited their ability to implement digital transformation projects, while 17 percent said “severely”

  • 81 percent have had a digital transformation project fail, suffer a significant delay, or be scaled back in the last 12 months

  • 42 percent said they were behind schedule, or at risk of falling behind, on their most significant digital transformation project

  • 73 percent said that, while the huge potential of digital projects is often talked about, most of the time they fall short of being truly transformational or revolutionary – albeit a fall compared to the previous two years

At the same time, transformation is not slowing down. Ninety-one percent of respondents said that disruption in their industry has accelerated over the last 12 months, 40 percent “rapidly.” And organizations plan to spend $30 million on digital transformation projects in the next 12 months, compared to $27 million in the previous 12.

“Digital transformation has reached an inflection point,” said Matt Cain, CEO, Couchbase. “At this pivotal time, it is critical for enterprises to overcome the challenges that have been holding them back for years. Organizations that put the right people and technology in place, and truly drive their digital transformation initiatives, will benefit from market advantages and business returns.”

Organizations are well aware of the risks of failing to digitally innovate. Forty-six percent fear becoming less relevant in the market if they do not innovate, while 42 percent say they will lose IT staff to more innovative competitors, in turn making it harder to innovate in the future. As a result, organizations are pressing forward with projects, perhaps recklessly. Seventy-one percent agree that businesses are fixated on the promise of digital transformation, to the extent that IT teams risk working on projects that may not actually deliver tangible benefits.

One key to delivering tangible benefits is ensuring that digital transformation strategy is set with the needs of the business in mind. The majority of organizations (52 percent) still have digital transformation strategy set by the IT team, meaning the C-suite is not guiding projects and strategy that should have a major impact on the business. At the same time, the primary drivers for transformation are almost all reactive – responding to competitors’ advances, pressure from customers for new services and responding to changes in legislation were each reported by 23 percent of respondents. Conversely, original ideas from within the business only drive eight percent of organizations’ transformations.

“In order for companies to succeed with their digital projects and overcome the inherent challenges with these new approaches, they have to attack the projects in a comprehensive and systemic way,” continued Matt Cain. “Transformation is ultimately achieved with the right combination of organizational commitment and next-generation technology.  Change must be driven across the entire enterprise as a true strategic imperative, not left in the sole hands of the IT team. The best technology will then help companies enable the customer outcomes they desire.”

The report is based on an online survey conducted in May and June 2019 by Vanson Bourne, an independent market research organization. The survey included 450 heads of digital transformation, such as CIOs, CDOs, and CTOs, in organizations with 1,000 employees or more in the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany.
