Couchbase More than Doubles Footprint in Manchester with New State-of-the-Art Facility

Manchester, UK – June 26, 2019Couchbase, Inc. today proudly announced the opening of its new facility in Manchester, UK. Couchbase, recognised by Forbes as one of the next billion-dollar startups due to strong growth and future potential, has chosen to expand its presence in the city to meet the growing demand for its enterprise-class multicloud NoSQL database. The new office, located in the Northern Quarter, will accommodate up to 80 members of Couchbase’s engineering and support teams who will help enterprises such as Tesco, BT and Sky accelerate the innovation of their enterprise-critical applications.

“Manchester is quite simply a fantastic place to do business,” commented Huw Owen, Vice President of EMEA and APJ at Couchbase. “The city is the beating heart of the Northern Powerhouse with its great international transport links, world-class universities, and a highly skilled workforce. In fact, University of Manchester graduates first established our presence in the city six years ago, and our continued connection with local universities is a vital part of the decision to set up our EMEA engineering and support hub in the city.”

Couchbase has run an internship programme for undergraduates at the University of Manchester since 2014, with 20 students taking part so far. The company has also been an active participant in the Northern Quarter’s ongoing development as a hub for technology companies. Couchbase was the 1,000th beneficiary of connectivity vouchers as part of the ‘Superfast Britain’ scheme – a central government-funded scheme to improve business communications systems across the country.

“Technology is a crucial element of the UK’s economic future, and Couchbase is proud to be doing its part – both in choosing the UK as one of the global development centres where our innovative cloud-native distributed database technology is developed, but also in working with dozens of European businesses to develop exciting new digital services,” added David Haikney, Senior Director of Engineering at Couchbase. “We look forward to hiring more talented people in Manchester and helping many more organisations accelerate their application innovation.”

Couchbase Appoints Chief Revenue Officer to Deliver Next Growth Phase

SANTA CLARA, Calif. —June 19, 2019 – Couchbase, Inc. today announced the appointment of Denis Murphy to the executive leadership team as Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), bringing more than two decades’ experience in global sales strategy and execution. At Couchbase, Murphy will lead the company’s overall go-to-market optimization and expansion efforts to capitalize on the $45B+ database market as demand for Couchbase’s enterprise-class multicloud NoSQL database grows.

Murphy brings to Couchbase deep experience with taking technology companies from early-stage all the way through successfully scaled public companies, serving as both an operator and an advisor in the fields of SaaS, networking, storage, and security.

Of late, in addition to serving as a strategic advisor to various companies, he spent nearly three years as the Worldwide Sales leader at Nimble Storage, which was eventually acquired by HPE.  While there, he transformed Nimble’s field operations and doubled the company’s revenues to just under $1 billion.  Murphy also notably served a nine-year tenure at Riverbed Technology, where he started as the first sales hire and ultimately became Senior Vice President of the Americas where he helped the company grow through a successful IPO to an $800M annual run rate.

“Couchbase’s success, both today and tomorrow, is rooted in the capability of our world-class leadership team,” said Matt Cain, President and CEO of Couchbase. “As Couchbase continues our journey to help organizations accelerate the innovation of their business-critical applications, I’m delighted that Denis has joined us in the pivotal CRO role. He has an extraordinary track record of success helping enterprises digitally transform to better serve their customers.”

“Modern applications require a level of flexibility, agility and cost-effective scaling that simply can’t be delivered in a rigid, complex and expensive relational database environment,” said Murphy. “As a result, enterprises are now choosing NoSQL databases but want to retain the power and familiarity of SQL in their development and operational environments.  Unlike other NoSQL databases, Couchbase offers robust capabilities for business-critical enterprise applications on a highly scalable and available NoSQL platform, built on open standards to simplify the transition from legacy databases. I’m excited to contribute to our customers’ and partners’ success as the company continues to innovate and grow.”

Couchbase Fully Supports MultiCloud Strategies Across AWS, Azure, and Google with Latest Release of Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes and OpenShift

BARCELONA, May 21, 2019– Kubecon Europe 2019, Booth #S15Couchbase, Inc. today announced the latest release of Couchbase Autonomous Operator, a groundbreaking update bringing advanced features that enable Kubernetes-based application deployers greater freedom and flexibility in their apps lifecycle.

Enterprises are looking to reduce the cost and complexity of deploying, managing and scaling multiple clusters and hundreds of database instances over hybrid-cloud platforms. Couchbase surpasses these expectations with Couchbase Autonomous Operator 1.2 with several new features, including:

Production certification for cloud-managed Kubernetes services

By working closely with partners, Autonomous Operator 1.2 brings production certification and full production support for cloud-managed Kubernetes services on Amazon (AWS EKS), Azure (Azure AKS) and Google (Google GKE) platforms. The 1.2 release also refreshes support for Red Hat OpenShift to the latest release.

This cloud-agnostic approach avoids vendor lock-in and allows enterprises with multicloud strategies to deploy, manage and move their applications to and from any cloud, at any time. Deployment for hybrid-cloud mixing public cloud providers with on-premises deployments on Red Hat OpenShift gives further flexibility.

Automated upgrade of Couchbase clusters

With Autonomous Operator 1.2, developers can now perform automated upgrades of Couchbase Server clusters. Upgrading an entire Couchbase cluster is as easy as specifying the desired Couchbase version in the configuration, and then pushing it to Kubernetes.

Automated rolling upgrade of Kubernetes clusters

With support for automatic rolling Kubernetes upgrades, Autonomous Operator 1.2 dramatically lightens the load of upgrading the enterprise Kubernetes or OpenShift cluster, while ensuring that the Couchbase deployment doesn’t experience any downtime or data loss.

Automated resource validation through Kubernetes Admission Controller

Autonomous Operator 1.2 now uses a Kubernetes admission controller, from within the Kubernetes cluster itself, to perform validation checks before implementing a new Couchbase cluster configuration. This protects the Couchbase deployment (and the Operator) from any accidental damage that might arise from an invalid configuration.

Support for Helm

Using Helm is an effective way to deploy, manage and upgrade the Operator, providing a single point of authority for keeping track of resources associated with each deployment. The addition of official Couchbase Helm Charts make installation, upgrade, and maintenance even easier.

Public connectivity for Couchbase clients

This release introduces support for connecting clients to the Couchbase cluster over the Internet via public IP-based addressing and dynamic DNS.

TLS certificate rotation

Kubernetes certificate rotation while online and providing services is supported in order to enable the replacement of expired or compromised certificates.

Supporting quotes

“Couchbase Autonomous Operator 1.2 sets a new standard for Kubernetes in production deployments. For the first time, a fully distributed, scalable, enterprise-class database that can be orchestrated by Kubernetes is generally available to enterprises wishing to automate the deployment, monitoring, scaling and managing of database applications both on-premises and in public cloud environments seamlessly. Further, it brings the required abstraction and automation to the table, for intelligent CI/CD pipelines.”
— Bipin Jethwani, Principal Architect at AT&T Entertainment Group

“The buzz around Kubernetes is spilling over to the database world. The new autonomous operator will make setting up Couchbase in a hybrid or private cloud environment behave more like a fully managed cloud database-as-a-service experience, greatly reducing the friction of deployment.”
— Tony Baer, Principal for dbInsight

“Couchbase is the first and only distributed database that brings a database into the CI/CD pipeline, which reduces the development-deployment friction so enterprises can bring their innovations to market quickly. With Couchbase Autonomous Operator 1.2, it is now possible for development teams to build their apps in the cloud quickly, and then deploy those apps in the cloud as well as on prem. Together with our partners, we now deliver this solution on GKE, EKS or AKS and Red Hat OpenShift, giving developers more options and flexibility than ever before.”
— Ravi Mayuram, SVP of Engineering and CTO, Couchbase

Couchbase Furthers Leadership in Mobile Database Innovation with Latest Release of Couchbase Mobile

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — May 2, 2019 – Couchbase today announced the latest version of Couchbase Mobile, the industry’s first embedded NoSQL database. Couchbase Mobile 2.5 enables developers to create mobile applications and manage data with secure embedded local device storage, advanced sync capabilities, and Machine Learning (ML) queries.

As today’s global enterprises look more and more at edge computing to address sensitivities around bandwidth, cost, and latency,1 they are recognizing the intrinsic value of capturing and using edge data in their business-critical applications. Couchbase Mobile 2.5 introduces new functionality for enterprises capitalizing on business-critical information at the edge with:

  1. 1. Predictive Queries for applications using ML2

  2. 2. Delta Synchronization for bandwidth constrained environments

  3. 3. Enhanced supportability

Predictive Query

The new Predictive Query API allows mobile applications to use trained ML models to run predictive queries locally on mobile devices against stored data. The predictions in the database can be correlated with predictions made in real-time from mobile cameras and other local context sources.

ML in the database on the edge offers several benefits, including fast correlation of real-time predictions with application data, decreased operational cost of ML infrastructure, increased privacy, and online/offline support that all ultimately provide a better customer and employee experience.

In retail, predictive queries enable employees and customers to easily access detailed inventory and product information using their phone’s camera. For example, when a customer asks an employee, “What shirts do you have that match these pants I’m wearing?” Using a mobile app that uses Predictive Query, the employee can take a picture of the pants, the query can correlate the image of the pants with the product catalog items stored on their phone, and the employee can answer that question like an expert – anytime, anywhere, online, and offline.

Delta Synchronization

With delta sync, enterprises can realize bandwidth savings when synchronizing data between the mobile device and enterprise servers as well as with peer-to-peer sync between mobile devices. This feature only syncs the individual parts of the document that have changed, resulting in significant reduction in network usage and faster sync time. For example, the transfer size of a 50 byte change to a 2000 byte product catalog document using delta sync would achieve ≥97% compression, where transfer using Gzip would typically achieve ≤70% compression.

Enhanced supportability

The enhanced supportability of Couchbase Mobile 2.5 introduces enhanced logging support as well as advanced stats reporting. Troubleshooting issues in mobile apps deployed in production is challenging, and the latest enhancements alleviate these challenges with continuous logging support, where more detailed logs can be captured any time a problem occurs. Additionally, the enhanced synchronization statistics makes it easier to monitor and control costs of managing such deployments.

Supporting Quotes

“Mobile is a significant trend in data management today, which has the ability to integrate data at the edge with business process data, thus enabling organizations to be able to take immediate action on that data. As an early mover in the mobile database space, Couchbase continues to iterate and innovate on its mobile database technology ensuring that its customers are well-positioned to take advantage of this trend.”

–James Curtis, senior analyst, Data, AI & Analytics at 451 Research

“As an early adopter of Couchbase Mobile, we’ve been able to convert our vision of providing attendees with a first-class mobile experience into a reality.”

–Brent Ryan, Senior Enterprise Architect, Cvent
