As the healthcare industry recently wrapped up its biggest event of the year, HIMSS19, we’re thrilled to announce that Couchbase was awarded the IoT Health & Wellness Product of the Year for its support of a mobile diabetes management app called BD BRIIGHT™.

Couchbase received the award  for supporting the application’s offline capabilities and secure synchronization of patient data from medical IoT devices to the cloud is improving diagnostics and the delivery of health care.

In the case of Type 2 diabetes, a major obstacle to optimized treatment has been the lack of individualized data. It’s too difficult for patients to collect the data, and even when they do, doctors don’t have the time to sort through it all.

The solution uses connected medical devices and a mobile app to automatically log real-time data on a patient’s insulin and glucose levels, activities, meals, and location. Based on the data, the mobile app provides patients with customized alerts and recommendations. The clinician portal collects all the data and presents it to doctors in an efficient format for making diagnoses and determining the best course of treatment.

Why Couchbase?

Couchbase made it extremely easy to launch the BD  BRIIGHT™ app and portal, and to add rules over time as the solution evolved. Couchbase empowered the application to build a responsive, flexible application at scale, and has supported its impressive user adoption, growing to hundreds of thousands of users in 2018.

The app provides an end-to-end diabetes management experience for patients and clinicians. That includes a machine-learning-enabled chatbot that provides personalized content for each user via guided digital conversations that aim to uncover the “why” behind a glucose reading. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients see specialized content, and the personalization flows from there.

IoT devices in the health and wellness industry are essential for life-saving measures, and we are honored that BD chose Couchbase to assist them in their journey to give patients with diabetes back the control they deserve.

At Couchbase, we are proud of our contribution to our customers’ incredible products, and the healthcare industry is just one example of how our customers are successfully implementing life changing technologies.
