Couchbase Redefines the Database to Simplify the Transition from Relational to NoSQL

Couchbase, the database for the Digital Economy, today at O’Reilly’s Velocity conference announced the general availability of Couchbase Server 4.5. This significant new release delivers powerful new capabilities that make it far easier for enterprises with deep SQL experience and relational database technology to adopt NoSQL for mission critical applications. Couchbase has enhanced its breakthrough, SQL-based query language N1QL (“nickel”), with new features like graphical tools for visually exploring the data model and building ad hoc queries. Additional enterprise capabilities include advanced security, as well as significantly faster queries and indexing that extend Couchbase’s performance leadership in the NoSQL industry.

“As companies evolve to compete in the Digital Economy, they’re introducing modern database technologies to meet new application requirements. Couchbase has built a reputation for delivering unmatched performance required by web, mobile and IoT applications,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering at Couchbase. “With the innovations in Couchbase Server 4.5, we’re extending our long-standing performance leadership to a new class of enterprise applications that require complex query processing, while also making it even easier for enterprises to undergo digital transformation by leveraging existing SQL-based skills and technology investments.”

RDBMS to NoSQL – Smoothing the Transition

The N1QL query language, introduced in Couchbase Server 4.0, empowered developers and admins, for the first time ever, to use their SQL skills to access and query JSON data. Couchbase Server 4.5 builds on N1QL, adding new features that make it even easier for customers to introduce NoSQL into their existing architecture, and give them greater confidence in making the transition:

Query Workbench – A built-in query editor for writing and executing queries in N1QL and immediately viewing the results. Query Workbench makes it fast and easy to run ad-hoc queries on the fly.

Auto schema discovery – Allows data modelers to visually explore and understand the shape of their data, and lets admins easily manage data even as it quickly changes. This makes it easy to evolve from the structure of relational to the more flexible JSON format.

Query monitoring and profiling – Admins can monitor individual queries and the nodes running queries to discover diagnostic and performance details, enabling faster troubleshooting.

“At Amadeus, our booking platforms process nearly 500 billion travel-related data requests per day. We work with Couchbase to help support these services and keep the travel industry moving,” said Michael Hirschberg, senior system engineer big data, Amadeus IT Group. “Couchbase Server 4.5 delivers impressive new capabilities, from enhanced security features to significantly faster data access and queries, which allows us to expand and accelerate our use of Couchbase to support more applications and use cases.”

Couchbase Extends Performance Lead

Couchbase Server 4.5 includes numerous improvements that extend its performance lead to many new types of use cases that rely on complex queries. For customers, performance advantages translate into significant cost savings (fewer resources required for a given workload) and better end user experiences. Select features driving improved query performance in Couchbase Server 4.5 include:

Memory-optimized global indexes – Lets developers build global indexes using a highly optimized, in-memory and lock-free data structure. This delivers faster, fresher indexes and high performance queries under very high data modification rates.

Array indexing – N1QL’s support of array processing within queries has been extended – now it’s possible to create an index of array elements ranging from plain scalar values to complex arrays or JSON objects deeply nested in the array, further improving query performance.

Flexible JOINs – N1QL has been extended to support new query optimizations that more efficiently handle JOINs, increasing performance of these queries by orders of magnitude.

Fast partial reads and writes with JSON documents – Allows data in a document to be added, removed or modified within a document – without the application having to read and write the entire document. This results in better network utilization and faster reads and updates for large documents.

Improved Enterprise Grade Security

As more mission critical applications are deployed on Couchbase, security becomes an increasing concern. The new release introduces two big advancements in security:

  • Couchbase Server 4.5 uses X.509 certificates to provide strongly trusted on-the-wire encryption for client-server communications, whether within a single cluster or across multiple clusters or data centers. This new capability makes it simple for administrators to manage and rotate certificates without application downtime.
  • The new release adds role-based access control (RBAC) for administrators. In addition to the existing encryption and auditing facilities, RBAC provides fine grained control over administrative access and simplifies compliance with governance rules.

Production Certified Support for Containers

Couchbase Server 4.5 also includes production certified support for Docker and Red Hat OpenShift container platforms. Customers can now confidently leverage these platforms to more easily and quickly scale their Couchbase deployments and maximize resource efficiency, while simplifying the full application lifecycle.

Couchbase Server 4.5 is available today for download here. Additionally, Couchbase will be showcasing Couchbase Server 4.5 at O’Reilly Velocity, in booth 810.

Couchbase Advances N1QL Delivering 2-3x Faster Query Performance and Full Data Manipulation Support

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – December 15, 2015 – Couchbase today announced general availability of Couchbase Server 4.1, demonstrating rapid delivery of powerful new functionality and better performance on its landmark 4.0 release. The new release adds full CRUD support, as well as covering indexes and prepared statements to reduce latency of complex queries. It also expands platform support to further accelerate the adoption of Couchbase by large enterprises and the developer community. These improvements are driving upgrades from earlier versions with 20 percent of Couchbase enterprise customers already actively working on version 4.0 to expand the use cases running on Couchbase Server.

Tweet This: #Couchbase Server 4.1 advances #N1QL with 2-3x faster query performance & full data manipulation support https://bit.ly/1Qjs51G

“Couchbase is the only database vendor to bring the power and benefits of SQL to the new JSON data model and marry it with the performance of a distributed architecture that can both scale out and scale up,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering, Couchbase. “This new release makes it easier than ever for developers to build agile enterprise applications on a NoSQL database that has the architecture to operate at any scale.”

“We chose Couchbase to underpin one of our mission-critical applications for several reasons. Its best in class architecture and performance at scale are clear differentiators, but lesser known is that with the introduction of N1QL, its document capabilities make it possible to replace use cases where we’ve previously used relational,” said Suresh Subasinghe, principal architect, enterprise applications architecture, United Airlines. “N1QL’s similarity to SQL makes it easier for us to introduce NoSQL to the enterprise, and the introduction of covering indexes in the 4.1 release significantly increases the performance of N1QL queries, making my team even more excited for what we can do with Couchbase.”

Industry Standard CRUD Operations for NoSQL

In October, Couchbase introduced N1QL, a new SQL-based query language, which makes it easy for developers familiar with SQL to build applications on top of a JSON data model. With the release of Couchbase Server 4.1, Couchbase has extended N1QL and is offering full support for all CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations with industry standard SQL-based N1QL:

  • INSERT allows both singleton and multi-document inserts;
  • UPDATE and DELETE enable the manipulation of a set of documents based on specific criteria. Both of these statements use available indices to efficiently identify and update documents;
  • UPSERT and MERGE statements combine two sets of documents based on given criteria.

Support of CRUD operations through standard SQL syntax makes it exponentially faster for developers to manipulate JSON documents just as simply as they would handle tables with SQL. Additionally, these new N1QL statements are fully supported in Couchbase SDKs, REST APIs, and Simba’s JDBC and ODBC drivers.

“We continue to be impressed with Couchbase’s speed of innovation. By further extending N1QL for support of CRUD, Couchbase is giving SQL developers a faster and easier on-ramp to NoSQL,” says Simba Technologies Chief Technology Officer George Chow. “With the release of Couchbase Server 4.1, the Simba Couchbase ODBC and JDBC drivers now offer full data-manipulation support in either N1QL or SQL syntax, meaning developers can access the Couchbase buckets with N1QL, or read data with the ODBC/JDBC tables via SQL. Additionally, DML queries can operate on either the bucket or table level. This allows for an unprecedented level of query scope control while reducing the number of operations and reducing the amount of network bandwidth required to complete a task.”

Faster Query Results in Distributed Database Environment

Couchbase Server 4.1 introduces two new features that reduce latency of complex queries in a distributed database environment: covering indexes and prepared statements. These two features bring performance improvements for N1QL queries that make it even easier for developers to build applications and enterprises to expand use cases running on Couchbase Server:

  • Covering Indexes: A covering index is an index that contains all the fields required by a specific query. With a standard index, a query request will first scan the index for data and then spend additional time searching for the right data to complete the query. By using a covering index, only the scan of that covering index is required for data access. The result is lower query latency and a faster performing application.
  • Prepared Statements: A prepared statement enables execution of the same or similar query many times with high efficiency by avoiding repeated query parsing and optimization. Many applications require repeated execution of pre-defined queries with different parameters. Performing these repeated queries as ad-hoc statements requires query parsing, planning and execution each time the query is launched. Using a prepared statement template, where the execution plan is fixed and only specific variables are substituted each time the query is run, removes the overhead computing required to parse and compile an execution plan for these often-repeated queries. The result is lower latency and reduced CPU cycles – and a faster performing application.

“Seenit recently made the jump from Couchbase Server 3.1 to the 4.0 release so we could take advantage of N1QL for our ad-hoc querying needs. So far it’s been great and we’ve managed to release a lot of new features using N1QL that would have previously taken us much longer to develop,” said Dave Starling, chief technology officer at Seenit. “With 4.1, we’ve been able to take this even further and improve the performance for our users using the new covering indexes and prepared statements, as well as develop new features that take advantage of the new CRUD operations.”

Tweet This: GA of @Couchbase Server 4.0 brings unmatched agility, scalability & performance to Web, #mobile & #IoT applications https://bit.ly/1OMzdCe

“Couchbase Server 4.0 is a transformational release. It dramatically increases the types of applications and use cases that Couchbase can support, now with even greater levels of performance and scale,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering, Couchbase. “With innovations such as a our new SQL-based query language, N1QL, and foundational improvements like Global Secondary Indexes, Multi-Dimensional Scaling and Cross Datacenter Replication, we are providing enterprises the breadth of functionality they need to deploy a single distributed database under the majority of their Web, mobile and IoT applications.”

Couchbase N1QL: Agile Development through Flexible Modeling and Powerful Query

Couchbase Server 4.0 introduces a new SQL-based query language, N1QL (pronounced Nickel) that helps developers build enterprise-class applications with less code and greater agility. N1QL is an efficient and complete declarative query language that makes it easy for developers familiar with SQL to build applications on top of a JSON data model that can be extended on demand. Using N1QL, developers can:

  • Develop applications faster by querying data with a familiar SQL-based query language;

  • Develop applications with less code by leveraging a declarative query language to express complex logic executed in the database – instead of writing and executing it within the application;

  • Develop applications with greater agility by creating new indexes and queries without restructuring the data model;

  • Develop applications by reading, writing and querying data in any of the most popular languages and frameworks, with options for asynchronous and reactive data access;
  • Leverage JSON to nest data within a single document or leverage N1QL to model and query data that is stored across multiple documents.

Tweet This: New SQL-based query language, #N1QL, helps devs build enterprise-class applications with less code & greater agility https://bit.ly/1OMzdCe

Better Business Insight with Popular Reporting, Visualization and BI Tools

Couchbase Server 4.0 with N1QL also enables standard SQL-based reporting and data visualization tools to access data stored within Couchbase. Through ODBC and JDBC connectivity provided via Simba drivers, that can work with both the standard SQL-92 and N1QL dialects, enterprises can gain business insight using the most widely adopted BI and data visualization tools, including Microsoft Excel, Tableau, Looker, Qlik and more to access data stored in Couchbase.

Multi-Dimensional Scaling and Global Secondary Indexes: Couchbase Solves Distributed Query Performance Limitations

Couchbase Server 4.0 introduces breakthrough architectural innovations that radically improve query performance in a distributed database: Multi-Dimensional Scaling and Global Secondary Indexes. Multi-Dimensional Scaling, previewed earlier this year, provides a better approach to hardware provisioning by enabling systems to scale up or scale out. With this capability, organizations can assign various workloads to specific hardware resources to meet application performance requirements.

Couchbase Server 4.0 is the first distributed database to support Global Secondary Indexes, which extend the performance and scale gains achieved through Multi-Dimensional Scaling. In a horizontally scaling system, the index is typically spread across every server, which can potentially slow down query execution by creating a broad “scatter/gather” requirement. In Couchbase Server 4.0, Multi-Dimensional Scaling makes it possible for Global Secondary Indexes to be assigned to specific hardware resources. This greatly reduces the magnitude of “scatter/gather,” resulting in significant performance increases of query execution within a distributed system.

Tweet This: Breakthrough innovations in @Couchbase Server 4.0 radically improve query #performance in distributed #databases https://bit.ly/1OMzdCe

Powerful Global Data Distribution with Cross Datacenter Replication Filtering

Couchbase Server 4.0 extends its industry leading Cross Datacenter Replication (XDCR) functionality with new filtering capabilities. XDCR is used for many purposes, most commonly high availability and disaster recovery. With the new filtering functionality, subsets of data can be ‘filtered’ for geographic replication without requiring the entire data set to be replicated between datacenters. This delivers a broad set of benefits including making data available to geographically distributed locations with low latency, minimizing network traffic by replicating only the data relevant to a specific geography and the ability to replicate relevant data between private datacenters, public clouds, or both to leverage hybrid cloud infrastructure.

By combining the power of N1QL for application development and business insight, with architectural innovations in Multi-Dimensional Scaling, Secondary Indexes and XDCR, Couchbase Server 4.0 delivers a new level of functionality and performance for distributed architectures that will revolutionize enterprise application development. Developers building Web, mobile and IoT applications for Digital Economy businesses can get started today by downloading Couchbase Server 4.0 and visiting the Couchbase Developer Portal.

Tweet This: 100K mobile developers using @Couchbase to build offline #mobileapps https://bit.ly/1LkIDlT #NoSQL

“The day is quickly arriving when mobile apps will only meet user expectations by delivering the same experience offline as they do online. We see a huge shift in the market as app developers and large enterprises adopt this mindset and only build apps that work regardless of connectivity,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO at Couchbase. “The reason for Couchbase Mobile’s accelerated success is simple: it makes it easy for developers to build the new generation of mobile apps. And our performance and ease of use advantage make Couchbase uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Product Innovation

Couchbase Mobile delivers a solution that enables developers to quickly build always-available, always-responsive mobile applications. Couchbase Mobile includes three components: Couchbase Lite, Couchbase Sync Gateway and Couchbase Server. Taken together, these products provide developers with a powerful, new platform for building robust and network-independent mobile apps, dramatically reducing the code needed to manage data synchronization and substantially accelerating time to market.

Couchbase also announced general availability for Couchbase Mobile 1.1. This new release introduces preview support for ForestDB, bringing the next-generation Couchbase storage engine to mobile. Additionally, the Couchbase Mobile 1.1 release adds change notification capabilities to the cloud database. Using change notifications, or web hooks, developers no longer have to write custom code to poll for changes within either the cloud or device database. Now, when data is changed in either database, external services and systems are notified and can run the appropriate application logic. This important functionality saves developers significant time by reducing the amount of code they need to write to maintain data integrity in both the cloud and the device, which helps them get their applications to market faster.

Couchbase continues to invest in making Couchbase Mobile accessible to developers building any kind of application on any platform. Over the past year Couchbase Mobile has released support for all major operating systems and platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, OSX, Linux, Xamarin, Unity, Microsoft .NET, Adobe PhoneGap and more. Oracle, MySQL, Cassandra and MongoDB Among Developers to Benefit from Breakthrough Query Language, Couchbase N1QL

Couchbase, Inc. is adding fuel to the NoSQL fire. At its user conference, Couchbase Connect, happening now at Levi’s Stadium, the company announced beta for Couchbase Server 4.0 and provided thousands of attendees a glimpse into its breakthrough query language: N1QL: SQL for JSON. N1QL (pronounced Nickel) is the world’s first comprehensive declarative query language that combines the power of SQL with the flexibility of JSON. This makes it faster and easier for developers to build enterprise Web, mobile and IoT applications on top of the world’s most scalable NoSQL database: Couchbase Server.

Tweet This: Couchbase previews breakthrough query language N1QL at #CBConnect https://bit.ly/1ETEDkt

“With the introduction of N1QL, we are the first NoSQL vendor to offer a query language for NoSQL databases that is based on SQL,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO at Couchbase. “This makes it easy for enterprises to leverage their workforce knowledge and existing investments in the massive SQL ecosystem, against the performance and scale of NoSQL. N1QL will accelerate adoption of NoSQL as the standard database for enterprise Web, mobile and IoT applications.”

“N1QL brings the power of SQL to the document data model, which removes one of the biggest barriers to broader enterprise adoption of NoSQL. Until now, developers have had to make a choice when picking a database,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering, Couchbase. “They could leverage the power of standard SQL, but be constrained by a rigid relational model, or develop on a flexible JSON data model, but accept query limitations that hinder development of rich applications. N1QL eliminates that compromise. With N1QL, Couchbase Server adds ease of application development to its proven scalability and performance leadership.”

Why SQL for NoSQL?

SQL has been the database industry’s standard query language for more than 40 years. Millions of developers around the world building scalable, enterprise applications today are using SQL either directly or indirectly through application development frameworks. By leveraging existing SQL constructs, N1QL will be familiar and easy for developers to adopt.

While SQL delivers strong query power, the rigid schema requirements of traditional databases have been a roadblock to releasing fast, scalable and responsive Web and mobile applications. JSON data models remove these limitations, but until now, NoSQL databases have lacked a standard rich query language that is familiar and easy to use. N1QL changes all that by extending SQL, recognized by virtually every developer in the world, to JSON, the industry standard data model for Web, mobile and IoT applications.

“NoSQL systems have proven their value in the enterprise with ease of development, performance and scalability, but developers still need a query language that lets them build applications that require complex queries on semi-structured data,” said University of California, San Diego computer science and engineering professor Yannis Papakonstantinou. “UCSD defined SQL++ to provide the industry with specifications for a SQL backwards-compatible declarative language that works on semi-structured data. N1QL is consistent with our specification – it gives developers a fully declarative and SQL-compatible query language to build applications that leverage the agility of JSON. We think N1QL will propel NoSQL adoption just as SQL originally propelled Relational Database Management System adoption.”

Tweet This: Couchbase N1QL consistent with academic SQL++ specs developed by @UCSanDiego & will propel #NoSQL adoption #CBConnect https://bit.ly/1ETEDkt

N1QL Improves Developer Agility

Developers need agility. They want to build rich applications that utilize a wide variety of data without the rigid limitations of relational databases, but they also want to query the data in ways that SQL has traditionally enabled.

N1QL gives developers access to the full power of SQL to query and transform semi-structured JSON data in anyway the application requires. This includes the ability to build a flexible JSON data model consisting of multiple documents that can be queried via JOINS, and can NEST or UNNEST documents to leverage the relationships among data. There is no longer a need to create a single document to query JSON data.

Additionally, N1QL is accessible via a developer’s preferred development framework, whether that is Spring, LINQ, Ottoman or something else. Since the application processes query results directly as streams of JSON documents, there is no longer an impedance mismatch and no need for a complex translation layer.

“Roomlia has been testing Couchbase N1QL and we’ve already noticed many advantages – especially with the ability to use ODBC connector for real-time data access,” said Vince Valenti, CTO, Roomlia. “We do reporting and BI with Microsoft Excel and Bi360, and N1QL makes it fast and easy to access data stored in Couchbase Server. That is just the beginning – N1QL has created the perfect marriage of Couchbase NoSQL databases and traditional RDBMS SQL queries to create the proverbial “paradigm shift” in way companies think of NoSQL databases.”

N1QL Drives Couchbase Ecosystem

N1QL will further accelerate adoption of NoSQL in the enterprise by making access to data stored in Couchbase Server easy and efficient. N1QL has full compatibility with the SQL ecosystem via connectors and standard JDBC / ODBC drivers. This allows enterprises for the first time ever to connect popular ETL, reporting and BI tools to Couchbase Server, and in turn is building massive momentum in the Couchbase ISV ecosystem as companies like Avalon LLC., Informatica, Looker, Metanautix, Simba Technologies and Tableau partner with Couchbase to provide deeper, supported integrations.
