Couchbase, Inc., the leader in database solutions for the Digital Economy, announced today at Couchbase Connect16 a range of new capabilities including full text search and real-time analytics that will dramatically simplify the way developers and architects build Digital Economy applications. With a single platform delivering operational, search and real-time analytical functionality, digital businesses can now create a range of intelligent and data-intensive applications without the complexity of mapping and moving data between disparate systems or the difficulty of managing multiple technologies.

Tweet this: .@Couchbase announces new full text search capabilities and real-time analytics going beyond #NoSQL @ #Connect16 https://bit.ly/2fUDNnF

“Today, businesses expend considerable effort to get insights into its operational data. Typically, data is extracted from its operational database and then gets transformed and loaded into a data warehouse or a Hadoop cluster,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president of engineering and products, Couchbase. “Getting insights from this data can take anywhere from hours to days. Couchbase Analytics will reduce time to insights to only seconds.”

Couchbase Analytics

Increasingly, customization and personalization of applications based on behavior has become key to the customer experience, and in-application analytics take personalization to the next level. Customer behaviors and patterns that enterprises are already tracking in their operational database can now be immediately leveraged to provide more relevant information, products or services back to the customer. With the elimination of ETL (Extract, Transfer, Load), jobs, and reduced dependency on other technologies, Couchbase Analytics simplifies the ability for digital businesses to develop highly-customized apps.

The Couchbase Analytics developer preview release empowers developers to run complex, ad-hoc queries on operational JSON data stored in Couchbase to get truly real-time insights using the new distributed parallel analytics engine. This analytics engine is delivered as an independently-scalable service using Couchbase’s breakthrough Multi-Dimensional Scaling technology, enabling users to run analytics on the same data platform without any impact to their business operations.

“Consumers increasingly expect a personalized experience from the companies they engage with, driving the need for the analysis of operational data to support personalized experiences, content and offers,” said Matt Aslett, research director, data platforms and analytics, 451 Research. “As such, we anticipate growing demand for databases that support combined operational and analytic processing to deliver analytics services without impacting the performance of operational applications.”

Couchbase Full Text Search

The new Full Text Search capability, in developer preview, is built on the popular open-source project Bleve and is now fully integrated with Couchbase. This functionality enables developers to add rich text search features like faceting and relevance-based scoring to their apps without replicating data to a separate search system. A single click now extends the powerful management capabilities Couchbase is known for, like auto data distribution, rebalance and node failover, to the text search service.

“At Seenit, we depend on our database to store hundreds of gigabytes of data associated with our videos, including entities, visual tags, transcriptions and sentiments,” said Dave Starling, CTO, Seenit. “We already extensively use N1QL for our structured querying, but now with full text search integrated into Couchbase, we can seamlessly search all this data and derive relevance-based intelligence using a single data platform.”

Couchbase Server 4.6

Digital businesses are increasingly dealing with interactions across a geographically-distributed customer base. For data like game scores, best-sellers, standby lists, live-streams and active stocks, it is now required for the application to manage these interactions in real-time with consistency. Couchbase Server 4.6 makes developing these highly-interactive, globally-distributed applications much simpler. Building on market-leading capabilities including Cross Data Center Replication (XDCR), Couchbase Server 4.6 adds multi-data center awareness, globally-ordered conflict resolution, and a range of other developer-centric features to speed up and simplify app development, enabling enterprises to reduce time-to-market and development costs.

Key features in Couchbase Server 4.6 include:

Couchbase Redefines the Database to Simplify the Transition from Relational to NoSQL

Couchbase, the database for the Digital Economy, today at O’Reilly’s Velocity conference announced the general availability of Couchbase Server 4.5. This significant new release delivers powerful new capabilities that make it far easier for enterprises with deep SQL experience and relational database technology to adopt NoSQL for mission critical applications. Couchbase has enhanced its breakthrough, SQL-based query language N1QL (“nickel”), with new features like graphical tools for visually exploring the data model and building ad hoc queries. Additional enterprise capabilities include advanced security, as well as significantly faster queries and indexing that extend Couchbase’s performance leadership in the NoSQL industry.

TWEET THIS: Couchbase introduces #Couchbase Server 4.5 – simplifying transition to #NoSQL http://bit.ly/1tx9XbL

“As companies evolve to compete in the Digital Economy, they’re introducing modern database technologies to meet new application requirements. Couchbase has built a reputation for delivering unmatched performance required by web, mobile and IoT applications,” said Ravi Mayuram, senior vice president, products and engineering at Couchbase. “With the innovations in Couchbase Server 4.5, we’re extending our long-standing performance leadership to a new class of enterprise applications that require complex query processing, while also making it even easier for enterprises to undergo digital transformation by leveraging existing SQL-based skills and technology investments.”

RDBMS to NoSQL – Smoothing the Transition

The N1QL query language, introduced in Couchbase Server 4.0, empowered developers and admins, for the first time ever, to use their SQL skills to access and query JSON data. Couchbase Server 4.5 builds on N1QL, adding new features that make it even easier for customers to introduce NoSQL into their existing architecture, and give them greater confidence in making the transition:

Query Workbench – A built-in query editor for writing and executing queries in N1QL and immediately viewing the results. Query Workbench makes it fast and easy to run ad-hoc queries on the fly.

Auto schema discovery – Allows data modelers to visually explore and understand the shape of their data, and lets admins easily manage data even as it quickly changes. This makes it easy to evolve from the structure of relational to the more flexible JSON format.

Query monitoring and profiling – Admins can monitor individual queries and the nodes running queries to discover diagnostic and performance details, enabling faster troubleshooting.

“At Amadeus, our booking platforms process nearly 500 billion travel-related data requests per day. We work with Couchbase to help support these services and keep the travel industry moving,” said Michael Hirschberg, senior system engineer big data, Amadeus IT Group. “Couchbase Server 4.5 delivers impressive new capabilities, from enhanced security features to significantly faster data access and queries, which allows us to expand and accelerate our use of Couchbase to support more applications and use cases.”

TWEET THIS: #Couchbase Server 4.5 allows #Amadeus to expand use cases and keep the travel industry moving http://bit.ly/1tx9XbL

Couchbase Extends Performance Lead

Couchbase Server 4.5 includes numerous improvements that extend its performance lead to many new types of use cases that rely on complex queries. For customers, performance advantages translate into significant cost savings (fewer resources required for a given workload) and better end user experiences. Select features driving improved query performance in Couchbase Server 4.5 include:

Memory-optimized global indexes – Lets developers build global indexes using a highly optimized, in-memory and lock-free data structure. This delivers faster, fresher indexes and high performance queries under very high data modification rates.

Array indexing – N1QL’s support of array processing within queries has been extended – now it’s possible to create an index of array elements ranging from plain scalar values to complex arrays or JSON objects deeply nested in the array, further improving query performance.

Flexible JOINs – N1QL has been extended to support new query optimizations that more efficiently handle JOINs, increasing performance of these queries by orders of magnitude.

Fast partial reads and writes with JSON documents – Allows data in a document to be added, removed or modified within a document – without the application having to read and write the entire document. This results in better network utilization and faster reads and updates for large documents.

Improved Enterprise Grade Security

As more mission critical applications are deployed on Couchbase, security becomes an increasing concern. The new release introduces two big advancements in security:

  • Couchbase Server 4.5 uses X.509 certificates to provide strongly trusted on-the-wire encryption for client-server communications, whether within a single cluster or across multiple clusters or data centers. This new capability makes it simple for administrators to manage and rotate certificates without application downtime.
  • The new release adds role-based access control (RBAC) for administrators. In addition to the existing encryption and auditing facilities, RBAC provides fine grained control over administrative access and simplifies compliance with governance rules.

Production Certified Support for Containers

Couchbase Server 4.5 also includes production certified support for Docker and Red Hat OpenShift container platforms. Customers can now confidently leverage these platforms to more easily and quickly scale their Couchbase deployments and maximize resource efficiency, while simplifying the full application lifecycle.

Couchbase Server 4.5 is available today for download here. Additionally, Couchbase will be showcasing Couchbase Server 4.5 at O’Reilly Velocity, in booth 810.

Couchbase and Spark are uniquely capable of providing the scale and performance that Big Data requires,” said Will Gardella, director of Big Data product management at Couchbase. “The Spark data processing engine and Couchbase NoSQL database are a natural fit to perform end-to-end, real-time data analytics. Integrating these two memory-centric technologies via the Couchbase Spark Connector provides a compelling Big Data solution that can dramatically improve overall business success for Digital Economy businesses.”

Web, mobile and IoT applications store and process ever increasing, massive amounts of data that when effectively leveraged, can deliver great customer experiences and create enormous competitive advantage. To achieve these benefits, businesses must have an analytical platform, like Spark, that can quickly and scalably extract data insights, and an operational database platform, like Couchbase, that can quickly and scalably turn those insights into actions. Because of the tremendous data volume and variety, the analytical and database platforms must be highly flexible, scalable and efficiently integrated together.

“By combining the power of open source Apache Spark with Couchbase, organizations will be able to exponentially increase the value derived from their Big Data,” said John Tripier, senior director of business development at Databricks. “We are excited to see Couchbase extending the power of Apache Spark, by making it easier and faster for their customers to gain performance advantages from the insights they derive from their Big Data initiatives.”

The Couchbase Spark Connector provides a flexible, efficient, open source integration between both of these best-of-breed technologies. The Couchbase Spark Connector enables ultra-fast streaming data exchange between the two platforms – reducing time to insight and time to action. In short, Couchbase NoSQL database together with Apache Spark stream processing enables applications to get smarter, faster.  Examples of use cases that benefit from the Couchbase Spark Connector include:

  • Real-time product recommendations. eCommerce applications suggest products to customers using proprietary, complex analytics that trigger recommendations, promotions or discounts.
  • Failure detection. IoT sensor-driven applications evaluate and predict component failures using complex machine learning algorithms and streaming analytics on real-time data, which in turn can generate corrective actions, notifications and alerts.
  • Network intrusion detection. Network monitoring systems detect potential security threats using ETL and analytics over metadata and historical access logs, subsequently taking immediate protective action.
  • Fraud detection. Fraud detection applications compare questionable transactions to known statistical models using analytics and machine learning, and rating them.
  • Product and customer 360. Comprehensive product and customer management tools aggregate data from multiple sources into a single unified repository, thereby providing a 360 degree view not previously available from the source repositories.

The Couchbase Spark Connector is available today for download here. Additionally, Couchbase will be providing demonstrations of the integration at Spark Summit, in booth B7.
