Telerik Launches Industry’s First Apache Cordova Verified Plugins Marketplace

WALTHAM, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Telerik® today announced the availability of the Verified Plugins Marketplace, the first-of-its-kind gallery of Cordova/PhoneGap plugins to extend and empower cross-platform hybrid mobile development. Free to the community, the gallery provides thoroughly tested and documented plugins to help ease app development initiatives.

“We are excited for Couchbase to be one of the first enterprise-level LINQ providers in the Telerik Verified Plugin Marketplace”

Telerik recently surveyed nearly 2,200 developers and IT decision makers. The survey results indicate more than 80 percent of respondents are using open source within their development cycles.1 However, enterprises are still hesitant to fully leverage open source solutions that are not certified and supported. The Verified Plugins Marketplace provides a single location to add and access a series of Telerik-certified plugins necessary for mobile development.

“In the true spirit of open source, we’ve delivered a single destination for developers to get the latest, proven plugins and also have the opportunity to talk directly with app authors,” said Aaron Mahimainathan, Chief Product Officer, Telerik. “We know Cordova/PhoneGap is at the heart of hybrid mobile development and our Verified Plugin Marketplace is open to everyone using PhoneGap to push mobile apps forward. In fact, it’s much more than a marketplace—it’s a real community that enables deep dev-to-dev communication about the technologies that matter to them.”

Since launching in August, Telerik has posted more than two-dozen plugins ranging from individual developer submissions to plugins supporting technologies from CouchbaseLeanplum and AYLIEN. Plugins range from Google AdMob banners to a background audio plugin, calendaring, barcode scanning, push notifications and more. Telerik plans to expand the marketplace with additional plugins from enterprise-level partners and individual authors.

“We are excited for Couchbase to be one of the first enterprise-level LINQ providers in the Telerik Verified Plugin Marketplace,” said Wayne Carter, Chief Architect of Mobile, Couchbase. “By adding LINQ on top of Couchbase Server, Telerik is making it easier for the .NET developer community to build scalable, enterprise class mobile applications on the industry’s most complete NoSQL database.”

Telerik is the provider of Telerik PlatformSM, a cross-platform mobile development solution, built on open standards, for iOS, Android and Windows Phone development. It addresses the entire application development lifecycle and integrates with numerous tools, frameworks and services. While the Verified Plugin Marketplace does not require use of Telerik Platform, customers worldwide benefit from using Telerik Platform alongside AngularJS, Kendo UI, PhoneGap, GitHub and more.

Couchbase Server 3.0 Beta Begins

Mountain View, CA – August 21, 2014 – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, today announced the beta release of Couchbase Server 3.0.  With this beta release, Couchbase seeks to get valuable user input on new features that strengthen its core architecture and greatly improve the developer and administrator experiences. In addition to making the beta version available, Couchbase has launched a bug bash with winners to be announced at its annual user conference in San Francisco, Couchbase Connect.

“In this release, we are extending our core architecture in ways that further Couchbase Server’s lead as the most scalable and best performing NoSQL database,” said Ravi Mayuram, Senior Vice President of Products and Engineering, Couchbase. “In addition to foundational changes, like the advanced stream based protocol and tunable memory, that improve performance and enable Couchbase to support many new use cases, we have dramatically improved the developer experience making it easier to build and extend applications built on Couchbase.”

Couchbase Server 3.0 solidifies Couchbase’s lead as the best performing, most scalable NoSQL database, and makes it faster and easier for developers to build apps on next generation technologies.  The beta, available for download now, is a great opportunity for developers and administrators to start familiarizing themselves with the many new capabilities Couchbase Server 3.0 will deliver.

Advanced Architecture Delivers Unbeatable Performance, Scale and Reliability

Couchbase Server 3.0 foundational advancements introduce a next generation, stream-based protocol, Database Change Protocol (DCP), that dramatically reduces latency, enables blazing fast speed by removing bottlenecks, and provides better utilization of increased memory and network capabilities. With the new DCP, Couchbase view performance is dramatically improved: changes made to documents are immediately streamed and rapidly indexed, making it possible to query data in near real time speeds. Additionally, DCP reduces latency for Couchbase Cross Data Center Replication (XDCR) by replicating data memory-to-memory from the source cluster to the destination cluster.

The new release also introduces the NoSQL industry’s first and only on-the-fly tunable memory, enabling businesses to manage big data however they want: tune for all data to stay in memory for super fast response times, or for an appropriate subset to reside in memory.  This new capability gives Couchbase Server the power to support very large data sets efficiently and cost effectively, and makes it possible for Couchbase Server to support a variety of new use cases as the database can be configured on the fly to support whatever the application needs.

New Features Improve Experience for the Developer, Administrator and the Enterprise

Couchbase Server 3.0 also includes numerous enhancements and new features that deliver industrial-strength, enterprise grade administration. Some highlights of the new release include:

Simplified Administration:

  • Couchbase Server 3.0 includes new options for incremental backup and restore. This new ability, which enables incremental backups of only data changed since the last backup, requires less storage and completes faster.
  • Administrators will also benefit from new bucket priorities.  Buckets are isolated, virtual containers that logically group records within a cluster; they are the functional equivalent to a database.  This new prioritization capability gives administrators better control of bucket resource allocation with pause and resume controls that enable XDCR replication to be stopped and started again during maintenance.

Enterprise Class Security:

  • Couchbase Server 3.0 raises the bar on NoSQL security with encrypted data access. SSL encrypts data in-flight between client and server, providing secure on-the-wire data access for applications and administrators.
  • Making access safe and secure, Couchbase Server 3.0 introduces encrypted HTTPS access to the Couchbase administrator console and the REST API.

Ease of Development

  • With Couchbase Server 3.0, developers can use Couchbase 2.0 SDKs to access fully integrated, native JSON, making it easier and faster to build applications in the most widely used languages.
  • New and powerful asynchronous and reactive interfaces in Java and .NET give developers the ability to build richer applications, with better IO performance.
  • New integrations with Spring, gEvent, twisted and more, make it easier for developers to build applications on popular, open source frameworks.

A full listing of new features can be found here.

Couchbase Server 3.0 Bug Bash

As part of the beta release, Couchbase is also announcing the Couchbase Server 3.0 Bug Bash, a contest inviting developers to put Couchbase Server 3.0 to the test.  Couchbase is giving rewards, swag and public recognition to developers who help make Couchbase Server 3.0 a secure, high quality, and bug free release. Winners will be recognized in three categories: most severe bug, most unique bug and most number of bugs.  Developers interested in joining the bug bash should visit www.couchbase.com/bugbash/.

Couchbase Secures $60 Million in Funding to Capture Larger Share of $16 Billion Big Data Market

Mountain View, Calif. – June 26, 2014 – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, today announced a $60 Million series E round of financing. The round was led by two new investors, WestSummit and Accel Growth Fund and brings the total amount of Couchbase funding to $115 Million.   All existing venture capital investors also participated in this round of financing.

The new investment is further evidence of the growth of the global big data market which is segmented into two halves: operational data management, largely led by NoSQL vendors and analytical data processing, led by Hadoop vendors.  The operational data management segment of big data is starting to accelerate at a much faster pace, driven by large enterprise adoption of NoSQL.

“Global adoption of NoSQL for operational big data initiatives is just beginning.  Business have spent years trying to get Oracle to efficiently scale, or looked to MongoDB to experiment with small projects on non relational infrastructures,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO Couchbase.  “But, as these companies become more dependent on applications that simply cannot perform or scale on MongoDB or Oracle, they are turning to Couchbase. That is because Couchbase Server is designed and built to deliver the scale and performance needed by next generation infrastructure.”

Couchbase Uniquely Positioned to Win Operational Big Data Market Share

IDC predicts that the market for big data will reach $16.1 billion in 2014, growing 6 times faster than the overall IT market, with software accounting for 24% of the big data market.  While Hadoop drives the analytical segment of big data, NoSQL is the catalyst for operational data management. Rapid acceleration in the growth of the NoSQL market is driven by multiple factors, the biggest being enterprise adoption of next generation architectures that support big data initiatives.

“Accel is interested in finding the leaders for the big data market,” said Kevin Efrusy, Partner at Accel Partners.  “Couchbase is in a great position to disrupt the database market. It is building momentum with Oracle replacements and demonstrating continued competitive success over other NoSQL vendors.”

Couchbase is uniquely positioned to become the de facto general purpose NoSQL database of choice.  Its flagship product, Couchbase Server, is architected to consolidate multiple layers of functionality delivering the simplicity of a key value database, the flexibility of a document database and the read speed of an in-memory database.  This layer consolidation means Couchbase Server is singularly able to support multiple big-data use cases, making it an ideal choice for enterprises re-platforming for their next generation projects on a single infrastructure that is future-proof and cost effective.

Evolving Mobile Revolution

Support for mobile applications is at the top of every IT agenda, and these mobile initiatives are evolving to include new requirements.  A typical mobile data strategy even a year ago, assumed that data would be kept in the cloud.  But now there is a shift happening at an accelerating pace, where data needs to be always available.  That creates a requirement for storing big data on a device, machine, wearable, etc. and being able to sync it with data stored in the cloud, or on other devices.

With its May launch of Couchbase Mobile, Couchbase leapfrogged the competition by delivering an end-to-end operational big data management platform that supports both cloud and edge based computing.  With Couchbase Mobile, enterprises have the ability to manage data via the world’s first and only NoSQL mobile database, and if needed, sync data to the cloud through Couchbase Sync Gateway. With its first-to-market NoSQL mobile database, Couchbase is positioned to take significant share of the huge mobile market.

Investing in Growth

Couchbase has experienced incredible growth over the past year.  Sales have increased 400%, the company has doubled its employee base, added 8 offices around the world and won strategic deals at large enterprise accounts.  Couchbase will use this new round of funding to further its lead in innovation, as well as enabling global enterprise adoption of NoSQL and big data initiatives.  This will include continued product investments, expanded regional technical support operations and scaling its marketing and sales teams.

Both investment funds are new to supporting Couchbase. Accel Growth III is a new $1 billion fund focused on investing in later stage companies that are driving important new trends in technology adoption.  WestSummit is funded by its partners located across the US and China.  Leveraging its strong global network, it focuses on helping build growth stage technology companies into global market leaders. Raymond Yang, co-founder and managing partner at WestSummit will join the Couchbase Board of Directors.

“Our investment in Couchbase is testament to our belief that organizations around the world are moving to next generation architectures,” said Raymond Yang, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at WestSummit.  “China, and broader Asia, represent a huge market, and we believe Couchbase is well positioned to take leading share of this opportunity.  As an investor and board member, I’m looking forward to supporting their APAC growth.”

Couchbase Blows Past Competition in NoSQL Performance Benchmark

Mountain View, Calif. – June 25, 2014 – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, today announced preliminary results of an independent NoSQL benchmark by Thumbtack Technology, Inc., an industry leader in NoSQL consulting services, with engagements across industries from ad tech to financial services.

The scalability and performance benchmark followed the industry benchmark standards developed by the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB) and found that when measured against common workloads on some of the most common use cases, Couchbase consistently outperformed the competition.

“Couchbase Server is quickly becoming the de facto standard for an enterprise class, scalable NoSQL database that can reliably support mission critical applications and a wide variety of use cases,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase.  “It is also becoming obvious that MongoDB is simply not architected for managing mission critical enterprise deployments at scale.  This is why companies like Viber are replacing Mongo with Couchbase, and companies like PayPal choose Couchbase over the competition, as the next generation architecture for their business.”

Benchmark results

Couchbase’s design translates into the unmatched performance, which was demonstrated by the Thumbtack Technology benchmark:

  • Couchbase Server read-intensive throughput was 6x more than MongoDB
  • Couchbase Server read-intensive throughput was 7x more than DataStax Enterprise
  • Couchbase Server balanced read / write throughput was 7x more than MongoDB
  • Couchbase Server balanced read / write throughput was 2x more than DataStax Enterprise

“Thumbtack works with organizations around the world to build and deploy scalable solutions.  We have implemented almost all the leading NoSQL vendors – including the three tested in this benchmark,” said Ben Engber, Thumbtack Technologies.  “Our intention with this benchmark is to provide a current set of metrics for database performance that is easy for others to verify and duplicate.  We believe this study does that quite well, and as a result, we are confident in our results that Couchbase Server 2.5 outperforms the competition on all measures.”

About the benchmark

The new benchmark, conducted by Thumbtack Technology, was done with the goal of comparing several popular NoSQL databases in simple and common use cases.  The company has led production implementations at client sites for all versions of the databases tested and worked directly with each vendor to ensure optimal configuration for each of the tests.

Thumbtack Technology ran two classic use case scenarios.  The first emulated a typical application of 95% reads and 5% writes and the second emulated peak write loads, with 50% reads and 50% writes.  Thumbtack Technology provided the testing parameters to ensure that anyone wanting to replicate the tests is able to do so.  These include:

  • Tested database versions: Couchbase 2.5, DataStax 2.0.7 and MongoDB 2.6.1
  • Use of the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark
  • Keeping 90% of the dataset in RAM to achieve the highest performance
  • Running each database on dedicated hardware backed by SSD storage

More details will be available in the full July report.

Couchbase’s Architecture

Couchbase Server was designed from a simple, yet bold vision: build the first general purpose NoSQL database. That bold vision meant that the architecture had to support a large variety of use cases and a future laden with exponentially growing scalability performance and usability requirements. The Server currently organically consolidates the caching tier and the database tier. This gives Couchbase performance characteristics of a cache and the durability of a database. These foundational principles make the server easy to manage, perform at high speeds, scale horizontally and provide the highest availability.

Couchbase Mobile Enables New Breed of Network-Independent Mobile Applications

Mountain View, Calif. – May 21, 2014 – Couchbase, Inc., provider of the most complete NoSQL database, has released Couchbase Mobile, a new suite of products, that will revolutionize mobile applications.  Couchbase Mobile eliminates the network connection as a limitation by giving developers productized mobile data synchronization and the world’s first and only native embedded NoSQL mobile database.  These new products make it possible for mobile application developers to quickly and easily build apps that meet the always-on expectations of today’s users.

“With Couchbase Mobile, we reimagined how mobile applications should be built. Until now, mobile applications were built with the requirement that data must be stored in the cloud because it has been too hard to store and sync data from the device,” said Bob Wiederhold, Couchbase CEO. “Couchbase Mobile changes all that. Our mobile products give developers everything they need to build always-available and always-responsive applications in a fraction of the time it currently takes.  With Couchbase Mobile, the network no longer impacts application performance. When the network is unavailable, the app just works.”

Enabling the Next Generation of Mobile Applications

Mobile applications are expected to work anytime or anywhere, regardless of the limits of network availability or the complexity required to enable data synchronization. But mobile app developers are limited in the apps they can build because current mobile databases are all relational and thus poorly suited to manage the many types of unstructured data generated by today’s mobile users. Additionally, no productized solution has existed for the synchronization of unstructured data that is shared between the cloud and the device.

Couchbase Mobile changes all that.

Couchbase Mobile delivers a solution that enables mobile app developers to meet the demand for always-available, always-responsive mobile applications. Couchbase Mobile includes three components: Couchbase Lite, Couchbase Sync Gateway and Couchbase Server. Taken together, these products provide mobile application developers with a powerful, new platform for creating robust and network-independent applications, simplifying the code needed to manage data synchronization and considerably reducing time to market.

“We welcome Couchbase Lite as a smart solution to address the needs of mobile developers building applications that rely on data synchronization and intermittent connectivity,” said Jon Udell, Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc.  “We have been using Couchbase Lite in Thali, an experiment to determine through open source prototypes what it takes to make the web truly peer-to-peer. Thali uses Couchbase Lite as a key component of its data replication platform.”

Couchbase Mobile Products

  • Couchbase Lite: Couchbase Lite is a full featured, native embedded NoSQL mobile database built from the ground up for mobile. Lightweight in footprint, but delivering all the features of Couchbase Server, along with multi-master replication and conflict resolution. Data is secured during transport and on the device. In its first release, Couchbase Lite has native support for iOS, OSX, Android, Portable Java and Xamarin supported mobile platforms.
  • Couchbase Sync Gateway: Couchbase Sync Gateway enables replication between Couchbase Lite on a mobile device and Couchbase Server in the cloud. In addition to replication, Sync Gateway handles user authentication, access control, data filtering, and data change validation
  • Couchbase Server: For mobile applications that sync data with the cloud, Couchbase Server provides the most complete, most scalable NoSQL database built on a flexible JSON model. Couchbase Server makes it easy to modify applications without the constraints of a fixed database schema and delivers sub-millisecond, high-throughput reads and writes. Couchbase Server is easy to scale out, and supports topology changes with no downtime.

Couchbase Mobile Eco-System Quickly Forming

Further supporting rapid development and deployment of mobile applications, Couchbase is working with several cross platform development tool providers to deliver out of the box support for Couchbase Lite on the major mobile platforms: iOS, Android and .NET.

Xamarin

Xamarin provides a native mobile application development platform that enables developers to write fully native mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows in C#, sharing business logic, data access, networking code and other app logic code across device platforms.  Xamarin supports 100% of each device platforms APIs.  The result is native mobile apps with native interfaces that are built and maintained more efficiently thanks to code-sharing and reuse. In addition to announcing general availability of Couchbase Mobile, Couchbase also announced today the beta version of Couchbase Lite for .NET (LINK). Co-developed by Couchbase and Xamarin, Couchbase Lite for .NET gives the more than 600,000 developers using Xamarin a powerful new infrastructure to accelerate time to develop native mobile applications.

PhoneGap

PhoneGap is an open source development framework that provides a container for developers to wrap apps in, making it fast and easy to build mobile apps using the most popular web technologies: HTML, CSS and Javascript. The Couchbase Lite Plug-in for PhoneGap enables developers to build cross-platform mobile apps that are powered by Couchbase Lite by using PhoneGap and standard web technologies (HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript).  Developers simply build their Couchbase Lite powered mobile app, wrap it in a PhoneGap container, and then build executables for iOS and Android devices from the same code base.

“We no longer live in the pre-mobile world. Companies are moving to a mobile first mindset and enterprise IT is being called on to support that,” said Lyn Robison, Data Management Strategies Research Vice President, Gartner.  “But mobile application development teams have been challenged by a lack of infrastructure products at the data layer. A native mobile database with integrated sync will significantly reduce the hurdles faced by mobile application developers in today’s enterprise, allowing them to deliver apps that deliver business value all the time, with or without a connection.”
