As the Country Manager for Couchbase Spain, along with Raúl de la Fuente my Senior Solutions Engineer, we have the privilege to work on some of the most transformative projects in some of the worlds largest companies with some of the best partners. To recognize the incredible individuals and teams, last year I launched our inaugural Spanish Couchbase awards at a ceremony in Madrid. One year on, whilst we couldn’t meet face-to-face, we once again brought together our customers and partners for a virtual 2-hour award ceremony featuring an inspirational presentation from Ruth Beitia, reigning Olympic champion in the women’s high jump. Ruth’s message was about her experience as an elite athlete and how she overcame the difficulties to become the best, based on her own self-motivation and performance. This matched perfectly the hard work and passion demonstrated by our customers, who also in their own companies have leapt to new heights!

I wanted to take the opportunity to once again thank the winners and also to share why they were chosen. So here are the winners of the 2020 Spain Couchbase Awards!

Best Project Team of the Year: Orange Spain

We gave this award based on the successful modernisation of a number of critical back-office systems by moving the underlying database to Couchbase. We were highly impressed with the superb teamwork that transformed their applications and processes so professionally.

Most Innovative Project of the Year: Roche

The award is for Roche Diabetes Care due to their innovative digital solutions business, helping patients with diabetes and their caregivers. The Roche Diabetes Care Platform is a web application software that enhances disease management for healthcare professionals and patients with diabetes and seamlessly brings together diabetes-relevant data within a single digital solution for a more personalized approach to diabetes care. They leverage Couchbase as a solution to facilitate patients’ data synchronization from our Desktop apps to the RocheDiabetes Care Platform. We were highly impressed with not only the technical implementation but the positive impact this is having on people’s health.

Integrator of the Year: Accenture

When thinking about our many successful partners, we wanted to focus this year on one that has entrenched itself in some very large, complex enterprise projects. We chose Accenture because of their dedication and expertise in building solutions on Couchbase for Roche, Vodafone and Orange amongst others. The team at Accenture are always looking for ways to improve, exceeding expectations being a trusted advisor for our customers.

Digital Transformation of the Year: EVO Banco/Bankinter

With this award, we wanted to commend a customer that fundamentally changed their user experience with Couchbase. This year we selected EVO Banco for transforming and improving their mobile banking apps, which are used by customers to check positions, carry out transactions and manage cards, anytime, anywhere. The digital transformation project included migrating to Couchbase for improved reliability and performance.

Technical Excellence: Carrefour

This award recognizes the best practices and implementation of projects using Couchbase. Carrefour Spain used Couchbase to reduce time to market with a flexible solution that manages all website inventory across stores, warehouses, click & collect orders and third-party marketplace sellers. We awarded them with technical excellence after this year achieving zero downtime during peak times, sustained performance of 20,000 operations/second even under extreme load spikes of up to 4X normal workload with average response times less than 3 milliseconds.

Positive contribution to society: El Confidencial

This special award recognizes a customer who we think has made a positive contribution to society. We live in unusual and difficult times, with the pandemic affecting incomes, how we work, and how we live. We observed how El Confidencial, a Spanish-language general-information digital newspaper, demonstrated that during these difficulties they continued to invest in their teams and in technology in order to give accurate and honest reporting. This resulted in El Confidencial growing 37%, achieving almost 300 million page views per month and being a vital source for news and information during the crisis.

Thank you to all our customers and partners, not just those that won awards. We value all our relationships and look forward to another year of joint success and to see you face-to-face and healthy in 2021!
