Couchbase Continues to Widen Gap with MongoDB and Oracle as the Enterprise NoSQL Leader

Couchbase, Inc. added new customers and expanded business with existing customers in the second quarter of 2015. The company sees businesses around the world accelerating adoption of NoSQL technology for mission critical Web, mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Additionally, at its annual user conference at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the company launched the beta release of Couchbase Server 4.0, which includes N1QL (pronounced ‘Nickel’), Couchbase’s new query language that brings the power of SQL to JSON.
“NoSQL database adoption is quickly evolving beyond developer-led projects, to enterprise deployments supporting mission critical applications,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO at Couchbase. “Businesses are seeing that Web, mobile and IoT applications running on NoSQL deliver better performance and more flexibility. As a result, enterprises are embracing NoSQL for development of new applications, while replacing relational with NoSQL in many existing applications that require high performance, scalability and data flexibility.”
Couchbase second quarter highlights
New customer wins and expanded contracts at existing accounts: Q2 showed continued sales momentum around the world, with especially strong business in North America and Europe. Couchbase added new customers at F500 companies including AstraZeneca, Comptel, General Electric Software, Dixons, Intel, Office Depot, Schroders Symantec and Visa. Couchbase also significantly expanded business at existing accounts including Activision Blizzard, Amadeus, Cisco, DIRECTV, eBay, Factset, Neiman Marcus, Nuance, PayPal, Sizmek, Starhub and WebMD.
Couchbase Connect at Levi’s Stadium: In June, Couchbase hosted its annual user conference, Couchbase Connect, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Beta release of Couchbase Server 4.0: During Couchbase Connect, Couchbase announced the beta release of Couchbase Server 4.0. This new release will include the introduction of N1QL, which extends familiar constructs of SQL to the flexibility of JSON, making it easier for relational and NoSQL developers to build Web, mobile and IoT applications.
Partnerships with BI, reporting and ETL vendors: N1QL will further accelerate adoption of NoSQL in the enterprise by making access to data stored in Couchbase Server easy and efficient. N1QL is fully compatible with the SQL ecosystem via connectors and standard JDBC/ODBC drivers. This allows enterprises for the first time ever to connect popular ETL, reporting and BI tools to Couchbase Server and in turn is building massive momentum in the Couchbase ISV ecosystem, as companies like Avalon LLC, Looker, Simba Technologies, Informatica, Tableau and Metanautix partner with Couchbase to provide deeper, supported integrations.
Google Benchmark: Couchbase continues to outperform Cassandra and MongoDB in high-scale use cases. In a Google benchmark released in May, Couchbase Server 3.0 sustained 1.1 million writes per second with very low latency on Google Cloud Platform, using just 50 nodes, while Cassandra required 300 nodes. The results show that to sustain 1 million writes per second on Couchbase would cost 83 percent less than what it does on Cassandra – $56 per hour for Couchbase compared with $330 per hour for Cassandra.
