What is Sync Gateway?

The self-managed sync engine for Couchbase Mobile. It moves data between Couchbase Server, Couchbase Edge Server, and Couchbase Lite on every device.

Sync data securely across every tier of your architecture: Couchbase Server or Capella in the cloud, Couchbase Edge Server at the edge, and Couchbase Lite on each device. Compose star, hierarchical, peer-to-peer, or hybrid topologies from one set of components.

Access and manage data over the web with secure RESTful APIs. Webhooks push change events to external clients, data stores, and downstream pipelines, so Sync Gateway plugs into the systems already running your business.

Enforce read and write access from the scope and collection level down to individual users and roles. Sync functions provide programmable document-level routing and access control. The Admin REST API is authenticated by default, with support for OIDC, LDAP, and custom providers.

Scale horizontally to serve millions of connected devices. Tunable read and write options match performance to load. Sync Gateway-to-Sync Gateway Replication (ISGR) enables multi-tier deployments without custom middleware, so tiers grow independently.
