Couchbase Mobile

When the Internet Goes Down, Your Business Shouldn’t

Why you need Couchbase Mobile for scalable cloud-to-edge data sync

We’ve all experienced the spinning wheel. You’re mid-checkout, mid-order, or mid-task when the app freezes: “Please try again later.” For an individual, that’s an annoyance. For a business, it’s lost revenue, stalled operations, and eroded trust – multiplied across every customer, every store, and every field rep, all at once.

Here’s the truth for the modern enterprise: mobile apps no longer just support the business, they run it. When the field team’s ordering app goes down, orders stop. When the in-store point-of-sale drops mid-transaction, the sale is lost. When a clinician’s tablet loses connectivity, patient care is delayed. And networks fail constantly, not just in remote areas, but in dead zones, over spotty cellular connections, and even in the middle of busy city centers. With every internet outage that takes down your critical apps, you frustrate customers and leave revenue on the table.

Speed, security, and scale all matter for enterprise mobile apps — but companies consistently rank business continuity above them all. Mobile apps, whether internal or customer facing, must keep working even when the network doesn’t.

Consider the stakes. More than 62% of global web traffic now happens on mobile. and industries from manufacturing and energy to telecommunications and transportation increasingly depend on field service apps to equip workers in remote locations. The US interactive kiosk market alone is projected to reach $9.53 billion by 2030. But demand guarantees nothing: 82% of users say app stability is a top factor in whether they keep an app – just a few crashes and they uninstall, leave a one-star review, and switch to a competitor. It’s no surprise that mobile is a $330 billion market and still growing. Mobile is where business is won or lost. Enterprise-grade experiences have to be fast, secure, and scalable – but none of that matters if the app stalls the moment connectivity blinks. And in the emerging era of AI-powered apps, these problems only intensify at the edge.

Why the usual approaches fall short

If this problem were easy, everyone would have solved it. They haven’t, because every common approach involves a structural weakness:

  • Cloud-only databases only work when connected. Back end as a Service (BaaS) products can only cache data locally for short periods. They were never built for on-device operation, so supporting mobile means bolting on extra technology — more cost, more complexity, more to maintain.
  • Mobile-only databases give you an embedded store on the device but no enterprise cloud backend, forcing a fragmented, multi-vendor stack the moment you need real scale.
  • Homegrown open-source sync using SQLite or Postgres plus custom REST, WebSockets, or Kafka is expensive to build, fragile to maintain, and a permanent tax on your best engineers. Reliable data sync is notoriously hard to get right.

Couchbase Mobile: one platform, zero downtime

Couchbase Mobile is built differently: a single, end-to-end data platform from cloud to edge to device. For the enterprise, that translates into several concrete outcomes:

  • Zero downtime. Apps remain fully functional when networks fail, and data syncs automatically when connectivity returns. No outage windows, no lost transactions, no revenue left on the table.
  • Real-time data sync. Built-in synchronization from cloud to edge to device across millions of endpoints – no custom sync code to write or maintain. Delta sync minimizes bandwidth, and peer-to-peer sync lets devices share data directly, with no internet at all.
  • Works everywhere. Native mobile, cross-platform frameworks, embedded devices, web apps, and a lightweight Edge Server for truly disconnected environments like ships, aircraft, and remote facilities.
  • Enterprise scale, lower TCO. One platform from device to datacenter – enterprise backend and embedded database in one. No fragmented stack, no integration tax.
  • AI-ready at the edge. On-device vector search brings semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) directly onto the device – private, low-latency, and fully functional offline.

Cloud to edge to device, unified by sync

What makes those outcomes possible is a stack that is unified end to end by data synchronization:

  • Enterprise-scale cloud database – Couchbase Server and Couchbase Capella DBaaS provide a scalable, high-performance cloud operational backbone and AI Data Plane, with SQL++, analytics, and vector search.
  • Cloud to edge data sync – Sync Gateway and Capella App Services provide secure, bidirectional synchronization and access control between the cloud and downstream edge tiers and devices.
  • Embedded database on-device – Couchbase Lite is the full-featured embedded NoSQL database that runs directly inside your app on iOS, Android, cross-platform frameworks, IoT devices, and the web browser, with SQL++(SQL on JSON) , full-text search, and on-device vector search for Edge AI.
  • Edge-ready database server option – Edge Server provides a lightweight database server option for resource-constrained, disconnected locations such as restaurants, warehouses, or airplanes.

These components can be layered in any combination to meet your requirements for speed, availability, or data privacy. The critical difference: stitching together technologies from multiple vendors just to support mobile means juggling separate support contracts — and finger-pointing when something breaks. Couchbase delivers the entire stack – from cloud to edge to device – as a single platform. The result is lower total cost of ownership, less complexity, less risk, and faster time to market.

Proven where failure isn’t an option

Couchbase Mobile is a widely deployed product, more than 25% of all Couchbase customers rely on it for operations that simply cannot fail:

  • PepsiCo powers its always-on order-to-cash operation across 25,000 field users and 350,000 merchants.
  • Emirates digitized pre-flight operations for maximum app uptime, regardless of tarmac connectivity.
  • Princess Cruise Lines delivers personalized experiences for 2 million annual passengers, syncing ship-to-shore.
  • Maccabi Healthcare supports 2.3 million mobile users across patient and clinician applications.
  • PG&E powers field maintenance operations that must always work with or without a network connection.

PepsiCo’s deployment is the benchmark. Their Frito-Lay division runs one of the largest direct-store-delivery operations in North America; it’s the reason your favorite snacks are always on the shelf. Their order-to-cash application, SalesHub+, is considered the “cash register” of Frito-Lay. It’s how products get ordered, merchandised, and delivered to more than 350,000 retailers across the U.S. and Canada. By their own account, it brings in close to half a billion dollars in revenue every single week – all of it running on one platform from cloud to device with maximum business uptime.

What’s new in Couchbase Mobile

The latest Couchbase release brings updates across the entire Couchbase Mobile stack – from the embedded database on the device, to the sync layer, to the edge:

  • Bluetooth peer-to-peer sync (Couchbase Lite 4.1): Devices can now sync directly over Bluetooth, keeping apps collaborating and data consistent in fully disconnected, zero-network edge environments – no Wi-Fi or internet required. This is ideal for places like aircraft cabins, remote field sites, and warehouse floors where there’s no internet whatsoever. Couchbase Lite peer-to-peer sync enables unique use cases in isolated environments; check out this blog to learn more.
  • React Native support (Couchbase Lite React Native SDK 1.1 Enterprise Edition): Couchbase Lite now fully supports React Native for high-performance cross-platform apps, extending platform coverage alongside the existing Swift, Kotlin, Java, .NET, Flutter, C, C++, and JavaScript SDKs.
  • Sync Gateway 4.1: The cloud-to-device sync tier adds rolling upgrades to minimize downtime during maintenance, faster resync on large datasets, and system metadata isolation for cleaner, more reliable operations at scale.
  • Edge Server 1.1: The lightweight edge database server gains client-level access control, CORS support, credential rotation, and Windows and ARM support – hardening security and broadening where Edge Server can be deployed.

Together, these updates reinforce Couchbase Mobile’s role as the edge and device tier of the Couchbase Operational Data Platform for AI. The same governed platform that gives AI agents persistent memory and fast context retrieval in the cloud extends all the way to the device through Couchbase Lite, with SQL++, full-text search, and on-device vector search built in. That means your mobile and edge apps can deliver intelligent, AI-powered experiences with full data privacy and zero downtime, even when the network isn’t available: one continuous, governed data layer from cloud to edge to device.

Why it matters now

Couchbase has spent more than a decade building mobile database technology as a core strategic strength – not a bolt-on afterthought – and it’s backed by one of the fastest, most scalable database platforms in the industry. One optimized solution from device to cloud means lower TCO, no integration complexity, and consolidated risk. The engineering time you’d otherwise spend building and maintaining custom sync goes back into your product and your competitive advantage. And with on-device vector search and RAG support in Couchbase Mobile, you’re ready for the next wave of intelligent Edge AI apps.

Networks will keep failing — with Couchbase Mobile, your business won’t.
