As a follow up to last month’s post on getting to know Vlado Atanasov, we move to Prague to hear more about Vojta Jakubec.

Jakubec: I work as a Software Developer Principal at Concur (owned by SAP) on our travel product. I used to be responsible for part of our shared infrastructure including Couchbase caching. Nowadays I’m more focused on conversion of our old tech stack projects to modern equivalents. However, I still serve as the go-to guy for our other dev teams regarding Couchbase and often provide advice and consultation.

Jakubec: I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I love our city with its over thousand-year long history. My favorite hobbies are watching sports (ice hockey, American football, Formula One, …), photography and computer games.
Jakubec: This choice was actually made for me by Concur before I was hired. But looking back, I would have made the same decision myself. Back then the driving factor was native support for COM SDK which allowed us to use caching even from the oldest parts of our product. Today I would still pick Couchbase because of the transparency about how the whole system works and amazing communication on support of production issues.
Couchbase
Jakubec: For Concur, Couchbase became an essential tool to allow us scale rapidly. Our customer base is growing at an incredible speed and if we didn’t choose Couchbase several years back, we wouldn’t be able to support this kind of growth.
Jakubec: My favorite new feature is the inclusion of Multiplexing IO in the .NET SDK since version 2.2.4. It is a long-awaited feature for us and I worked directly with Jeff Morris to help him get started with this IO pattern. It’s off by default so you need to turn it on in config. Once you do, you get significant increase on data throughput while decreasing the number of open sockets.
Jakubec: World peace, clean renewable energy source and one large piece of tiramisu for me. ;-)
What is your favorite book or author, and why?
Jakubec: As a kid I fell in love with several collections of short stories from Arthur C. Clarke. He would often present near-future scenarios where problems were solved by out-of-the-box thinking. His work helped me to start looking for out-of-the-box solutions as I got older.
