Congratulations to our newest Couchbase Community Champion, Tom Coates who hails from Seattle.

Cuéntanos sobre ti y qué haces en tu rol diario?

I’m a Sr. Principal Architect at Nuance Communications (formerly Varolii Corp.) working on their Enterprise Proactive Engagement team. My day is split about 50/50 between system design and coding.

¿Dónde tienes tu sede y qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?

I’m based in Seattle, WA and spend my free time reading, camping, fishing, and snowboarding.

¿Qué te hizo elegir Couchbase?

I chose Couchbase for a number of reasons including scalability and ease of use, but it was the bi-directional XDCR that was the real deciding feature.

¿Qué has logrado usando Couchbase?

We’ve re-architected our entire monolithic platform into a suite of RESTful services that are largely backed by Couchbase. We’re currently capable of an order of magnitude more throughput than our previous platform, with a smaller overall footprint.

¿Qué característica de Couchbase usas y qué debería saber la gente al respecto?

Again, XDCR. I don’t know how often it’s used elsewhere but it’s so reliable and easy to use that it’s almost become an afterthought for us that our data will be in multiple data centers with extremely low latency. This was such a huge problem with other data stores – it’s amazing how simple it is now.

• Rebalancing of GSIs

• MOIs and standard GSIs on the same cluster

¿Cuál es tu libro o autor favorito y por qué?

Tough one … I’ll go with “The Dresden Files” by Jim Butcher. A great escapism series that I couldn’t put down; with a flawed hero and a ton of humor.
