Upgrading couchbbase Lite from 1.0.4 to 1.1.0 - Android Studio

Hello,

My application is using CBL 1.0.4 on Android and my sync gateway is 1.0.4-34
My main servers bucket are under version 3.0.3.

I want to upgrade Couchbase Lite to the latest version. I am using Android studio.

I see on the release notes :

Android Studio users should add the
following line to the top-level dependency section to your app’s build.gradle file:

                        compile 'com.couchbase.lite:couchbase-lite-android:1.1.0'

Is that the only thing to do ? Any other modifications required ?

Does Sync Gateway need to be upgraded too ?

Yes you should also upgrade Sync Gateway to the 1.1 release. Restarting SG with the same config file should work and connect to the same Couchbase Server bucket that was previously used by the 1.0.4 binary.

After adding

Gradle build crashes :

Execution failed for task ':app:dexDebug'.

com.android.ide.common.process.ProcessException: org.gradle.process.internal.ExecException: Process ‘command ‘C:\Travail\Java\jdk1.7.0_79\bin\java.exe’’ finished with non-zero exit value 2

However if i go back to 1.0.4, it builds correctly.

Not sure it is relevant, but this import was producing an error, i had to remove it so that gradle sync suceeds ( i didnt use that library anyway) :

import org.codehaus.jackson.map.ObjectMapper;

Thanks for posting the solution.

Couchbase Lite uses Jackson for serialisation/deserialisation of JSON and it could be that between 1.0.4 and 1.1 the Jackson API changed. IIRC Android Studio doesn’t remove imports of classes that are no longer used and it looks like it was breaking the build.

No the issue is still remaining.

Even after removing this import, it cannot build :

Execution failed for task ‘:app:dexDebug’.
> com.android.ide.common.process.ProcessException: org.gradle.process.internal.ExecException: Process ‘command ‘C:\Travail\NicoProjet\jdk1.8.0_25\bin\java.exe’’ finished with non-zero exit value 2

I just followed release’s update steps and modified my dependecies with :

compile ‘com.couchbase.lite:couchbase-lite-android:1.1.0’

Any idea how to solve this ?

From 1.1.0, CBL android/java uses Jackson 2.5.x. instead of 1.x.x.

Could you please update package of ObjectMapper if your app using Jackson.

This import was already there.
Tried to rebuild with my ObjetMapper removed of the code, same exception.

The issue lies somewhere else…

Hi @heretyk, seems like you’ve hit the 65k reference limit in android. Please follow these steps to see if enabling multidex support will solve your issues http://developer.android.com/tools/building/multidex.html

I’ve also had to increase the maximum heap size for the dex operations, adding the following field in the build.gradle file

dexOptions {
        javaMaxHeapSize "4g"
}

That solved my issue.

I had also to add this in the “defaultConfig” part of my build.gradle

multiDexEnabled true

I succesfully upgraded to 1.1.0 then.

Help, I’m having the same problem! My app is not big so I don’t know why I would hit the 64K limit. Does couchbase have a ton of methods that bring any app close to the limit? My app only uses couchbase and Dagger as dependencies so far. (There’s also JMock/Hamcrest but these are scoped to testCompile.)

If you are not working on Android studio, refer to your IDE documentation to apply the modifications.

Possible…If it solved your issue, and that before adding couchbase dependencies, you didn’t need it…then it is probably the case.
