Couchbase 6.6 comes with a much needed feature, Import documents using the Couchbase Admin Web Console. This provides an easy way to quickly import small<\/strong> datasets in a variety of formats to compliment <\/span>cbimport<\/span><\/a> which is a more comprehensive command-line solution, with a lot more data import options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this blog post, we will look at some use cases and some gotchas when Importing data.<\/span><\/p>\n

Checking out the feature<\/span><\/h2>\n

Import Documents is accessed by Clicking on the <\/span>Documents<\/b> link on the left panel and the <\/span>Import Document<\/b> button in the blue panel at the top of the page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fields are all self explanatory, but I\u2019ll take a look at importing a small dataset (just 5 lines) to demonstrate the feature. I have created 4 files with different formats on my laptop to demonstrate the feature. Note that we do not necessarily need an empty Destination Bucket, but for this test, I created a bucket <\/span>test<\/b> which does not have any documents yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s import our JSON List dataset.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. I clicked on the <\/span>Select File to Import<\/b> button and selected <\/span>airport.json<\/span><\/i>, a file with 5 JSON documents on my laptop.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Before actually importing the data, the screen shows a sample of the <\/span>File Contents<\/b> in different formats. This serves as a quick check.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Next I have a choice of setting the <\/span>key<\/b> of the document while importing, in the<\/span> Import With Document ID<\/b> radio buttons. The choices are <\/span>UUID,<\/b> or where possible, a <\/span>Value of Field<\/b>.<\/span>\n

    • Note when choosing Value of Field<\/b>:<\/span>\n
        \n
      • This field has to be in every document with a non-null, unique value.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • T<\/span>he tool does not ensure that candidate ID fields have unique values across every document. The Import UI only checks to ensure that the field is <\/span>present<\/b> in every document.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • \u00a0If you select an ID field with duplicate values, then older documents will get overwritten by new documents with the same ID.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • For now, I will stick with the <\/span>UUID<\/b> choice and go ahead with the Import.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Next, I selected <\/span>test<\/b> as my <\/span>Destination Bucket<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Then, I click on the <\/span>Import Data<\/b> button at the bottom of the screen.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Import is successful and it also displays the number of documents imported in a pop up box.
        \nThe screen also shows a helpful <\/span>cbimport<\/b> command in case the data size is large.<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>Lets import the same set of documents, but this time, choose the Value of Field<\/b> like so:

        \n<\/span>Now, that I have imported the same set of documents twice, but with different <\/span>keys<\/b>, I will now have 10 documents in the bucket. Let’s check this out by clicking on the <\/span>Document Editor<\/b> button in the <\/span>blue<\/b> panel on top.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Here we see the 10 documents, a set of 5 with the <\/span>id<\/b> field as the document key and another set of 5 with the server generated UUID as the key.<\/span><\/p>\n
