{"id":5938,"date":"2018-11-05T07:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-11-05T15:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/?p=5938"},"modified":"2024-01-12T12:19:09","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T20:19:09","slug":"the-2018-gartner-operational-dbms-magic-quadrant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/the-2018-gartner-operational-dbms-magic-quadrant\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2018 Gartner Operational DBMS Magic Quadrant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you follow the Operational DBMS market, you may have seen the recently-published Gartner Operational DBMS Magic Quadrant for 2018. \u00a0Each year, Gartner creates specific criteria that each vendor must meet in order to be considered for the MQ. And because the criteria changes from year to year, some vendor names on the MQ also change. \u00a0Case in point: Couchbase was included in the Operational DBMS Magic Quadrants from 2013 until 2016, but due to the changing criteria, not in 2017 and 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, Gartner\u2019s criteria focused on license revenue, growth, customer reviews, and technical capabilities. While technical capabilities and customer reviews remain mainstay criteria, license revenue and growth requirements vary from year to year. Couchbase hit the license revenue growth, technical capabilities, and customer reviews criteria for 2018, but fell slightly short on the license revenue requirement, and therefore, was not included in the 2018 MQ. \u00a0Again, Gartner\u2019s changing criteria helps explain why some vendors are in the MQ one year vs. another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is not published as part of the Magic Quadrants is company growth, industry recognition, and most importantly, customer feedback. Couchbase\u2019s revenue grew 60% year over year, and within the past two months, we opened a new office in Paris, relocated our HQ to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/press-releases\/couchbase-announces-new-headquarters-relocation-to-accommodate-growth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new building<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Santa Clara, and were voted best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/resources\/concepts\/in-memory-database\/\">in-memory database<\/a> by readers of DBTA. We also launched two major releases of our flagship product over the past year, earned \u201cTop Rated\u201d status on peer reviews site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustradius.com\/products\/couchbase-data-platform\/reviews\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TrustRadius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and were recently named a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/next-billion-dollar-startups\/2018\/#31ef73505261\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forbes Next Billion-Dollar Startup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u00a0Most importantly, where we really find the most \u201cmagic\u201d is directly from our customers, as we\u2019ve captured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/connect.couchbase.com\/us\/silicon-valley\/on-demand\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> during our past Couchbase Connect conferences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019d be hard pressed to find anyone in the tech industry who hasn\u2019t heard of Gartner and its coveted Magic Quadrants, and there\u2019s no doubt that being included provides a good deal of visibility. But right now, in addition to the aforementioned lists and distinctions, you can also find Couchbase included in Gartner\u2019s recent State of the Operational DBMS Market, 2018, which was published on September 6th. And for the promising companies that didn\u2019t make the Operational DBMS MQ, Gartner has the \u201cOther Vendors to Consider\u201d report for 2018, where you\u2019ll find Couchbase. \u00a0And look out for the upcoming Forrester Wave on NoSQL Databases, due out in March 2019.
