{"id":4827,"date":"2018-03-22T09:33:07","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T16:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/?p=4827"},"modified":"2025-06-13T19:28:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T02:28:22","slug":"ipv6-galore-couchbase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/ipv6-galore-couchbase\/","title":{"rendered":"IPv6 Galore With Couchbase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every single device on the internet, whether it be a laptop computer, cell phone, camera, or even your TV has an IP address. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The total number of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) addresses is over 4 billion, which is far less than the total number of mobile devices in the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As more and more appliances and devices come online everyday (as shown in the figure below), connecting them to the internet using IPv4 addresses might not be an option, because these addresses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/technology\/cio\/how-the-world-ran-out-of-the-internet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have already run out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To support the growing needs of our customers, we are happy to announce IPv6 support in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/announcing-couchbase-server-5-5\/\">Couchbase Server 5.5<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4828 size-medium_large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.37.25-768x459.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.37.25-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.37.25-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.37.25-20x12.png 20w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.37.25.png 788w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Figure 1 : Growth of devices and IPv6<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First defined in 1996, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPv6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internet Protocol Version 6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (IPv6) is the most current version of the Internet Protocol (IP), and incorporates many features that address several IPv4 challenges. Among the many challenges, it can support accommodating over 340 undecillion addresses &#8212; more than enough to handle the world\u2019s current IP needs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enabling IPv6 in Couchbase<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By default, when Couchbase Server starts up it uses IPv4. To enable IPv6 in Couchbase Server 5.5 and above, here are a few steps for the linux platform. (Note that based on your OS platform, the steps might be slightly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.couchbase.com\/documentation\/server\/5.5\/install\/ipv6-setup.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">different<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Repeat the following steps for each node of the cluster : <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Install Couchbase Server<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stop the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">couchbase-server<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\/opt\/couchbase\/etc\/couchbase\/static_config<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, set <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ipv6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">true<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delete <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\/opt\/couchbase\/var\/lib\/couchbase\/config\/config.dat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Restart the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">couchbase-server<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> service: this starts Couchbase Server in IPv6 mode. To check, point the browser at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/[::1]:8091<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is the IPv6 address and port number on which Couchbase Server should be running.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a clustered setup, IPv6 is enabled only when IPv6 is enabled on all the nodes<\/span><\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do you know if IPv6 is working? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For now, you can check the logs and see if IPv6 addresses are there:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4829 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54-1024x111.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54-1024x111.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54-300x33.png 300w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54-768x83.png 768w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54-20x2.png 20w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-17-at-15.40.54.png 1114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As shown in the figure above, you will see machine addresses in IPv6 format. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upgrading an IPv4 cluster to IPv6<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Given the complex nature of managing both an IPv4 and an IPv6 environment in general, most users are going to start a-new instead of upgrading in-place.\u00a0 In the event that you need to upgrade\/migrate your data from an existing cluster, we recommend using our <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.couchbase.com\/documentation\/server\/5.1\/xdcr\/xdcr-intro.html\">Cross Datacenter Replication<\/a> feature:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The source cluster must have dual stack support at the OS-level<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upgrade the source cluster to Couchbase Server 5.5<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create a new cluster with IPv6 enabled and configured, as above.\u00a0 Note that this cluster needs to be sized appropriately for the workload, but does\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong> need to be identical to the source cluster.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.couchbase.com\/documentation\/server\/current\/xdcr\/xdcr-create.html\">cluster reference and replication stream<\/a> from the source to the destination cluster.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.couchbase.com\/server\/current\/manage\/monitor\/ui-monitoring-statistics.html\">Monitor the XDCR queue<\/a> from the source until all mutations are replicated to the destination cluster. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reconfigure the application to start accessing the destination cluster.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once all applications are moved, the source cluster can be decommissioned.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IPv4 and IPv6 clusters cannot be paired for bi-directional XDCR replication.
