time to get started with <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.couchbase.com\/server\">Couchbase Server<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/MobileCB\">Couchbase Mobile<\/a> especially with Amazon&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/free\/\">AWS Free Tier<\/a> program that provides 12 months of AWS access.\u00a0 In this blog, we will explore how to get started with installing the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/marketplace\/search?page=1&amp;searchTerms=couchbase&amp;fulfillment_options=AMI&amp;filters=fulfillment_options\">Couchbase AMI<\/a> (Amazon Machine Image) to get up and running with Amazon EC2 in the cloud.\u00a0 The Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is an encrypted machine image of a specific computer running a base operating system that is configured a specific way.\u00a0 The AMI contains all the information necessary to start up and run the Couchbase softeware suite on the image.\u00a0 For this example we will be using Amazon Web Services (AWS) where it is the computing environment for running instances of an AMI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the follow-up blog post we will explore how to get a Couchbase Mobile application running against the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/sync_gateway\">Couchbase Sync Gateway<\/a> and Couchbase Server on AWS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>[1]\u00a0 Create New AWS Account<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first part is <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.aws.amazon.com\/gp\/aws\/developer\/registration\/index.html\">registering for a new AWS account<\/a>.\u00a0 The Free Tier is only available for new accounts on AWS.\u00a0 Click on the &#8216;Create an AWS Account&#8217; on the top right hand corner and fill in the credentials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/create-or-sign-in-aws-account.png\" \/>Once you go through the &#8220;Payment Information&#8221; setup and &#8220;Identity Verification&#8221; process with your phone, you will be brought to the support page plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/12signup-sequence.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choose the &#8216;<strong>Basic (Free)<\/strong>&#8216; plan to get started in the &#8220;Support Plan&#8221; page.\u00a0 Then continue to confirm your signup in the email address that you provided to verify that you are signed up to Amazon Web Services and that you have the Basic AWS Support plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>[2]\u00a0 Install Couchbase AMI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next we will login into our AWS account and then select &#8220;AWS Marketplace&#8221; on the bottom right which is highlighted in green below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/7aws-console-board.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You will be brought over to the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/marketplace\">AWS Marketplace<\/a> page where in the search field you would enter &#8220;<strong>Couchbase<\/strong>&#8221; like below and then click &#8216;<strong>GO<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/9search-couchbase-on-aws.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A couple different Couchbase Images would surface from the search result and for this blog post, as well as the follow up one, we will be referencing the &#8220;<strong>Couchbase Server &amp; Couchbase Sync Gateway Community Edition<\/strong>&#8221; AMI.\u00a0 This particular AMI contains both the Couchbase Server and Couchbase Sync Gateway software that we will have our Couchbase Mobile application connect to eventually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/10aws-marketplace-couchbase-search-results---highlights.png\" \/>Click on the particular image and you will be guided to the image information page.\u00a0 Below you will see the details on what you will be installing and the hourly fees associated.\u00a0 For Couchbase, the software is part of the Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/free\/\">AWS Free Tier Eligible Software<\/a> program and will not cost you anything while you are on the program though EC2 Instance usage fees may apply.\u00a0 Click on &#8216;<strong>Continue<\/strong>&#8216;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/11couchbase-server-and-community-edition-.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you clicked on &#8216;Continue&#8217; the next step is to set the parameters for the &#8216;1-Click Launch&#8217; where the <strong>EC2 Instance Type<\/strong> that is running for this blog is set to be &#8216;<strong>m3.medium<\/strong>&#8216; and where the <strong>Region<\/strong> selected is &#8216;<strong>US East (N.\u00a0 Virginia)<\/strong>&#8216;.\u00a0 Scroll down to the bottom of the configuration page to create a &#8216;<strong>Key Pair<\/strong>&#8216;.\u00a0 You may leave the &#8216;<strong>VPC Settings<\/strong>&#8216; as the default\u00a0 You may reference below the setup configurations and costs associated with the selections at the time of this blog&#8217;s publication.\u00a0 Click on the arrow pointing to the Key Pair that is highlighted:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/14vpc-security-key-pair.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You will be presented with a couple of steps to follow through.\u00a0 Click on the link that is presented in step one below, &#8216;<strong>Visit the Amazon EC2 Console<\/strong>&#8216; and you will be brought over to the EC2 Console.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/key-pair-drop-down.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now within the EC2 Console, click on &#8216;<strong>Create Key Pair<\/strong>&#8216; and then enter a name of your choice for the key pair.\u00a0 For this example, the key pair name &#8216;couchbase_aws&#8217; is used.\u00a0 When ready, click &#8216;<strong>Create<\/strong>&#8216; and your key pair will automatically download.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/16ec2-console-highlights.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you have your key created, you will see the &#8216;Fingerprint&#8217; field fill up with the key name and value within the EC2 Console.\u00a0 The downloaded key pair file is a .pem extension and you would need to store that safely in a folder on your local drive.\u00a0 You will need this in the follow up blog to SSH into your Couchbase instance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Return back to the previous Couchbase AMI page and your key pair will be shown along with the other AMI configuration details as shown below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/17key-pair-aws.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When you are ready, click on the &#8216;<strong>Accept Terms &amp; Launch with 1-Click<\/strong>&#8216; button to launch your Couchbase AMI on EC2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/13launch-on-ec2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You will see the sequence of screens below when your AMI is being prepared.\u00a0 And the last screen will show the Couchbase Server and Couchbase Sync Gateway Community Edition with the &#8216;running&#8217; status when the instance is ready in EC2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To see the Couchbase instance running in the Couchbase web console, click on the &#8216;<strong>Access Software<\/strong>&#8216; link highlighted below to launch the console in the browser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/18pending-ami.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/19ami-ready.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>[4]\u00a0 Couchbase Web Console<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Upon clicking the &#8216;Access Software&#8217; link, you will be guided to the Couchbase web console in the browser for the Couchbase instance as seen below.\u00a0 You may access this also directly in the browser by appending the &#8216;<strong>Public DNS<\/strong>&#8216; address that is obtained from the AWS console with &#8216;<strong>:8091\/index.html<\/strong>&#8216; shown below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/20couchbase-web-console.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Couchbase web console URL address is composed by:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin-left: 80px;\"><strong>URL:\u00a0 <\/strong>&#8216;Public DNS&#8217; + <strong>:8091\/index.html<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/21dns-instance-id---blurred.png\" \/>To log into the web console you would enter the credentials below where the password is found within your EC2 Console:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Username:<\/strong>\u00a0 Administrator<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Password:<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8216;Instance ID&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you have logged into the Couchbase web console, you will be presented with the &#8216;Cluster Overview&#8217; page for your Couchbase Server instance on EC2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/original-assets\/2015\/november\/database-on-amazon-installing-couchbase-ami-on-aws\/22couchbase-web-console.png\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
