Perhaps unsurprisingly, 2020 was different from previous years. However, it may come as a surprise to find out how attuned CIOs are to the plight of developers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2020, we surveyed 450 Senior IT decision makers from US, UK, France and Germany. We asked them to describe their digital transformation challenges and how developers are being affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Developers as heroes of DX<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many organizations were forced to implement their five-year digital transformation plans in a matter of months so as to adapt to new methods of working and adjust to rapid changes in markets. It is unsurprising that developers have been the heroes of this effort (92% of respondents agree). And <\/span><b>63 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said that the flexibility to change their goals when needed has been significantly helpful or even indispensable in meeting their digital transformation goals. Both of these factors naturally need a strong development team to succeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most notably, respondents were reluctant to accuse developers of slowing them down. Asked what factors had prevented them from pursuing new digital transformation projects the organization wanted, only <\/span><b>11 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> identified the development team\u2019s inability to meet its goals \u2013 a fraction of those citing, for instance, a lack of skills or the complexity of implementing technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Cause for <\/b><b>complaint<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we can see, developers are a vital part of enterprises\u2019 digital transformation strategies. However, like any other part of the business at present, they are also under pressure. Asked what complaints their development teams have, <\/span><b>49 percent <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of organizations reported that developers were being asked to do too much in too little time \u2013 a situation that could easily end in stress, fatigue and burn-out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Complaints reported by development teams\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/complaints-300x114.png\" alt=\"chart showing Complaints reported by developer teams\u00a0\" width=\"711\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/complaints-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/complaints-20x8.png 20w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/complaints.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ultimately, having to do too much in too little time leads to delays \u2013 especially if the organization\u2019s goals are already ambitious. In a year where rapid reaction to unforeseen events was the norm, it is perhaps inevitable that <\/span><b>40 percent <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of respondents said their development teams were behind schedule with their current projects. Yet this may be an issue of management as much as capability. After all, 46 percent of respondents couldn\u2019t give a precise answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Are development teams ahead or behind schedule?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/falling-behind-300x121.png\" alt=\"chart showing Are development teams and developers ahead or behind schedule?\u00a0\" width=\"766\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/falling-behind-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/falling-behind-20x8.png 20w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/falling-behind.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Clear goals for developers?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a definite issue in that the majority of organizations cannot get the best out of their developers. <\/span><b>86 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of respondents experienced challenges with their development teams. <\/span><b>40 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> struggle to set clear, measurable goals for development teams, and the same number find it hard to ensure teams always have the right technology. Communication is clearly an issue: almost a third (<\/span><b>31 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) are struggling to ensure development teams clearly understand the organization\u2019s strategic objectives and goals. Even solving issues is a struggle in itself: <\/span><b>31 percent <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had difficulty identifying and solving the challenges they face.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Development team challenges experienced by organizations<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/challenges-300x248.png\" alt=\"chart showing developer team challenges experienced by organizations\" width=\"663\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/challenges-300x248.png 300w, https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2021\/02\/challenges-20x17.png 20w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s clear that resolving these challenges would help address many of these developer complaints. At the same time, it will help organizations make the most out of their teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Looking to 2021<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The key to solving these issues is first giving teams the communication, guidance, and technology they need to succeed. For instance, teams shouldn\u2019t be struggling to create innovative services with legacy technology that isn\u2019t suited to the task. Nor should they be expected to adapt immediately to new technology that requires a completely new skillset. At the same time, organizations need to remember that more haste equals less speed. Leaders must take time to communicate clearly with developers to understand exactly what they contribute to the business. Clearly understanding the obstacles in their way will also result in a more efficient, more effective team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is especially important since, if anything, investment in \u2013 and likely expectations for \u2013 developers is increasing. During 2020, we saw development teams grow on average by 20 percent: from 51 to 61 members. Making this investment count will be crucial. While we may be more aware of the challenges ahead, 2021 isn\u2019t likely to be any easier than 2020.
