However, a General Purpose (GP) LLM&#8217;s knowledge is confined to its training data, causing it to &#8220;hallucinate&#8221; by providing incomplete or inaccurate responses. This undermines trust and credibility, preventing many GenAI Proofs of Concept (POCs) from reaching production. By introducing the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technique we can augment the LLM with proprietary data which grounds LLM responses in current and reliable facts. Successful RAG implementation requires a highly scalable and dependable database to serve as a knowledge base, vector database, and LLM cache, along with a robust platform for developing and scaling GenAI applications using leading foundation models.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Couchbase and <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/bedrock\/\">Amazon Bedrock<\/a> together offer an end-to-end platform to seamlessly build performant RAG applications across industries such as retail, healthcare, hospitality, gaming, and many others.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.couchbase.com\">Couchbase Capella<\/a>, a cloud-native high-performance DBaaS (Database-as-service), allows you to get started quickly with storing, indexing, and querying operational, vector, time series, textual, and geospatial data for your RAG applications while leveraging the flexibility of JSON. Further, it uniquely offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/hybrid-search\/\"><span>hybrid search<\/span><\/a><span>, which takes semantic search to the next level by blending traditional and vector search within a single SQL++ query to power applications that require highly granular search with high select specificity. This capability spans the cloud, edge, and mobile. Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed service that offers a choice of high-performing foundation models (FMs) from leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Mistral AI, Stability AI, and Amazon using a single API, along with a broad set of capabilities you need to build generative AI applications with security, privacy, and responsible AI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>In this blog, we present a RAG-powered chatbot application built using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/products\/vector-search\/\"><span>Couchbase Vector Search<\/span><\/a><span> and Amazon Bedrock. It leverages the Couchbase <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.couchbase.com\/ruby-sdk\/current\/ref\/travel-app-data-model.html\"><span>travel-sample data <\/span><\/a><span>stored in Couchbase Capella and Anthropic Claude model from Amazon Bedrock. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_16229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16229\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1\/2024\/08\/image1-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/image1-4-1024x425-1.png\" alt=\"Build Performant RAG Applications using Couchbase Vector Search and Amazon Bedrock\" width=\"900\" height=\"374\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1: Chatbot application developed using Capella and Amazon Bedrock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span>You can follow the steps below to develop your RAG application depicted in Figure 1.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span>Step 1: Create a vector index<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Step 1.1: Create a Capella cluster in a few minutes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>Create an account for free with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.couchbase.com\/sign-up\"><span>Couchbase Capella&#8217;s free tier<\/span><\/a> offering<span>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Select your preferred AWS region and get started with the Couchbase Capella cluster.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.couchbase.com\/cloud\/clusters\/manage-database-users.html\"><span>Configure Database Credentials<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>You can allow access from anywhere for this RAG implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>We will use the <\/span><b>travel-sample<\/b><span> Bucket.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Step 1.2: Create the vector index<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>On the <\/span><b>Databases<\/b><span> page, select the trial cluster where you want to create the vector index.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Go to <\/span><b>Data Tools &gt; Search<\/b><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Click <\/span><b>Create Search Index<\/b><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>By default, you will start in <\/span><b>Quick Mode<\/b><span>. Although not covered in this blog, consider using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/bedrock\/latest\/userguide\/guardrails.html\"><span>Bedrock guardrails<\/span><\/a><span> to ensure content that your company policy deems inappropriate is not returned as responses to your end user.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>By combining the high-performance data storage and retrieval capabilities of Couchbase with the range of model coverage, security, and usability of Amazon Bedrock for access to LLMs of choice, you can build performant RAG applications.
