Developers can use Capella iQ within the Query Workbench in the Capella UI and within VS Code and JetBrains IDEs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Have-iQ-create-you-a-query.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15295 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/Have-iQ-create-you-a-query-1024x676-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"594\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Capella iQ speeds up a variety of common tasks to accelerate the development cycle in natural language. Some examples are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Write SQL: <\/b><span>iQ creates SQL++ queries to interact with data<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><b>Create test data: <\/b><span>iQ accelerates development projects by creating sample data<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><b>Suggests indexes:<\/b><span> iQ helps build the right indexes to reduce query times<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><b>Generate SDK-specific program: <\/b><span>iQ assists in creating code for application development around the query.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>Supporting: C, .NET, Go. Java, Kotlin, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Scala\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Data from queries can be visualized as JSON docs, tables, and charts to accelerate insights\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should developers use Capella iQ vs. generic Large Language Models (LLMs)?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span>While LLMs generally understand SQL, they do not know the schema of your Couchbase collections. The Capella workbench integrates query, index advisor, query path explanation, and visual profiling to complete the workflow from question to SQL optimization.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>iQ automatically infers the schema of your collections, for customized prompts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>That reduces common LLM trial and error scenarios<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>iQ only sends the structure and schema of the data in your collection. It is included in every free trial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>In the Capella user interface, go to the <strong>Data Tools <\/strong>\u2192 <strong> Query<\/strong>\u00a0tab\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Click on the blue <strong>iQ<\/strong>\u00a0button on the right-hand side to open the Capella iQ window<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>On the top of the iQ window:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>Select <em>Bucket=travel-sample<\/em>, <em>Scope=inventory<\/em>, <em>Collection=airline<\/em> to provide the context. (You can select up to four collections)<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span>iQ will suggest sample queries to get you started<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/iQCreateChart02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15301 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/iQCreateChart02-1024x722-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"635\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Try clicking one of the suggested queries or ask your own by typing in the iQ prompt (e.g., Retrieve or insert data \u2026). Ask any follow-up questions to improve the query and the output you may be looking for. It&#8217;s that simple.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Test on your own data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Now let&#8217;s create a new dataset in Capella by using iQ to build some queries.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>As we will be working on a new dataset, let\u2019s first reset Capella iQ.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>Click on the <strong>Scope<\/strong> selector to select <strong>Select a Scope<\/strong>\u00a0to reset Capella iQ context<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<li><span>Keep the <strong>Bucket<\/strong> value the same, as <em>travel-sample<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Click the suggested prompt:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span>\u201cCreate scope, collections and data for an inventory management app of an audio store:<br>\n<i>categories: headphones and speakers (name and a short marketing description)<br>\n<i>items: real-life branded headphones and speakers (name, description, category, price, number in stock), use UUIDs\u201d<\/i><br>\n<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><strong>Run<\/strong>\u00a0the query to see the new scope and collections get created. Sample documents are inserted into the new collection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/iQCreateScopeCollectionData.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15293 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/iQCreateScopeCollectionData-1024x632-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"555\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Use the iQ suggestion to set the context to the newly created scope and collection. Alternatively, on the top of the iQ window select the newly created scope and collections. In this case, we selected <em>Scope=inventory<\/em> and <em>Collection=headphones, speakers<\/em>\u00a0as collections. This sets the context for iQ to help you provide better query suggestions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Let\u2019s review the inserted documents by using the following prompt:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><i><span>\u201cShow<\/span><\/i><i><span> me few documents from the collection headphones\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Try to run the query. Notice that since this collection is newly created and doesn\u2019t have an index, Capella iQ suggests creating an index using <\/span><b><i>Index Advice<\/i><\/b><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span>Create the index as suggested in Index Advice and then rerun the query in iQ<\/span><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Here are some additional sample query prompts for you to give it a try:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><i><span>\u201cShow me all items in the headphones collection that cost more $70\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n\n\n<li><i><span>\u201cShow me all items in the headphones collection that are in stock\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>As queries are run, Index Advice may suggest an appropriate index to speed up the query. To return to the iQ window, click on the blue <strong>iQ<\/strong>\u00a0button on the right-hand side to open the Capella iQ AI assistant window.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Capella iQ in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Similar to iQ being used within the Capella UI, developers are now also able to use iQ within some of their favorite integrated development environments (IDE). Capella iQ is available within VS Code and JetBrains IDEs as an extension.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image1-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.couchbase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/image1-2-1024x588-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"517\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Developers can start an iQ session within a separate side panel. Using iQ requires having Capella credentials.
