No replicas being created

I have two nodes in my configuration. I set replicas to 1 for the bucket, but I still don't have any replicas listed in the admin console. When adding documents is there anything additional i need to do to ensure that replicas are created? i'm using 1.8.1 and 0.6 python client library.
solved my own problem. the security group on my ec2 instance didn't have all the ports added.
