I am willing to invest time in couchbase, looking for a replacement for postgresql.
However, it is vital that the db is free and will remain free.
Is couchbase FREE?
The source is open, under Apache 2.0. Couchbase produces a couple of different binary releases, and the details are described over here:
Thanks for your response. But as you will notice, I was NOT asking about open source. I was asking about FREE. As in no money paid to use the database. As in MySQL and PostgreSQL.
The URL you included just mentions "Free Download". There's no pricing.
I'm asking about pricing. I want it to be FREE.
Let me know, or please direct me to one page that answers all questions. The entire couchbase is full of too many documentation starting points, all of which leave many simple questions unanswered.
I'm sorry, but you'll need to be a bit more specific about which part. That's why I'd pointed to the authoritative information.
Downloads for both community and enterprise editions are free. Support and updates are different between them, and not necessarily free.
If you're comparing Couchbase to MySQL and PostgreSQL, it's free much like both of those are free, yes.
Support I understand may cost money. As in, enterprise class support. But forums and community and mailing lists will be free.
But I do not understand "updates". Everytime an update is released for a FREE software, there will be a charge for it? WTF? WHat kind of logic is that?
Postgresql is free to download. Free to update and upgrade when new versions launch. Support from mailing lists (active and knowledgeable!) is free too. Of course if I want to contract a professional support firm, then I might have to pay.
Is CouchBase like this?
Yes, it's free like that. The URL I pointed to earlier covers all of those details.
