I was wondering if automatic compaction would ever be added to membase. I dont have a full idea of whether its necessary.
I don't expect Membase will be adding any auto-compaction features. When performing backups, it's recommended that you compact the backups with the vacuum option. See: http://www.couchbase.org/wiki/display/membase/Membase+Server+version+1.7...
The good news is that Couchbase Server 2.0, the successor to Membase, has an auto-compaction feature with various settings to meet the needs of fitting in with a workload in deployment. In other words, you'll be able to do things like schedule time of day, etc.
Is Couchbase 2.0 a document store that writes to disk asynchronously from memory like membase?
Edit: just found the couchbase 2.0 manual.
