Just got membase up and running on Ec2 but came across a Gear6 soluation.  Is it membase repackaged?

No, Gear6 had their own memcached AMI.  They have since gone out of business and are no longer supporting memcache.  Also, it was "just" memcached which means it didn't have any persistence, replication or dynamic rebalancing like Membase.

I am curious then what this soluation is.  They are offering 6G cache on a small Ec2 instance so there must be persistant storage.  I didn't realize Gear6 was out of commision but the technology was picked up by someone else.

The solution makes use of the underlying disk but still uses it as a cache...not persistent.

Yes, Violin acquired Gear6 but they are not continuing dev or support on anything memcache.
