Hi

I have installed bete4 on a fedora 13 box, but I can not get pasted step 1(Configure Disk Storage) with error message "Your path is invalid. It must be a directory writable by membase user" I am useing folder /opt/Membase/1.6.0beta4/data/ns_1.

I know membase can write and see these folders, If I delete folder ns_1 and then tell membase to use the above folder it will create the folder and create a file inside the folder(ns_1) called ns_log, the writes data into file ns_log, if I change ns_1 to ns_2 it will make that folder(ns_2) and write the ns_log file to it, but still refuses to use the folders.

all folders are set to 755 membase:membase
all file are set to 644 membase:membase

Any ideas

Steven

Steven, that error is actually using referring to a problem with the memcache process starting up. It was a bug in the UI to display an incorrect error message and this is being fixed for GA.

Can you grab the output of /opt/NorthScale/bin/browse_logs from that node and post it here? We should be able to see what's causing the problem.

Thanks Steven, that was very helpful.

There is a log message: ns_log: logging ns_port_server:0:Port server memcached on node 'ns_1@127.0.0.1' exited with status 71. Restarting. Messages: failed to set rlimit for open files. Try running as root or requesting smaller maxconns value.

This is saying that memcached was unable to set its limit for open file handles high enough. You should be able to resolve this by editing the file located at /etc/security/limit.conf and adding:

northscale soft nofile
northscale hard nofile

You should set to at least 10240. There are other ways to control the ulimit for file handles, but this is the easiest and least intrusive to the rest of your system.

We are working on making this error condition more easy to discover.

Let me know if that resolves your issue.

Hi Perry

The file Fedora 13 is /etc/security/limits.conf not /etc/security/limit.conf, I have now up a running, but I set a memory size of 256Mb and got a Memory Error, but increasing that size to 1024Mb allowed to move forward, it would be useful to include a minimum allowed memory on the dialogue, so users are aware of the limitation.

Thanks
Steven

Thanks Steven, that was a typo on my part!

Can you be more specific about the memory error? With the coming GA we are actually setting a minimum bucket size of 256mb for Membase buckets so I'm surprised that didn't work for you. Was this in the very first setup screen (after the welcome dialog), the setup for the default bucket or later on when creating a new bucket?

Thanks

Perry

Hi Perry

Yes it is on the first screen after the welcome screen, I have tried 256Mb and 512Mb both failed with "failed memory quota validation" I have attached the log for you, but works at 1024Mb (not included in log)

Thanks

Thanks Steve. How much RAM do you have in your system? I'll try to reproduce this when I get a chance.

Thanks Steve, I just checked in the latest build and we've improved this behavior and the warning messages. The GA will be released next week and I look forward to your continued feedback!

Thanks again.
