Hibernate support
Hi,
We have been looking into hibernate-memcached (http://code.google.com/p/hibernate-memcached/). However, development on that client seems to have ceased. Does anyone here know of a good way to integrate Hibernate with Membase? Or perhaps will Membase pick up maintenance of the hibernate-memcached client?
The current version of the hibernate-memcached client requires memcached-2.3.1.jar from spymemcached. My understanding from the spymemcached forums (http://code.google.com/p/spymemcached/issues/detail?id=153) is that their support for vbuckets is still forthcoming. It seems to me like this means hibernate-memcached won't really be usable with Membase until somebody works on it.
Thanks,
-Jacob
Hi Perry,
I guess my question really has three parts. :)
The first is whether there is some other supported method to use Membase as a backing store for Hibernate. Perhaps somebody here knows of one I don't.
The second is whether hibernate-memcached is likely to receive any support in the future. I could hope for support from the Hibernate people, or for the project to be adopted by the SpyMemcached people, but since we would be using it with Membase specifically, I thought I would ask here first. If NorthScale were to undertake supporting the plugin, that would be a big vote of confidence for us.
The third question is whether hibernate-memcached will support the native v2 protocol with Membase, which should be considerably faster since it does not involve a proxy and is a binary protocol. In a way this is the same as the second question, but I wanted to spell out my reasoning here.
Thanks,
-Jacob
Jacob,
-Might be good to ask that question to the membase google groups mailing list or to the Hibernate people. I'm not aware of one, but of course I'm no expert
-I've passed this along to our engineering and product management team. Definitely on our radar but not something I can commit to specifically.
-As far as performance goes, I expect that using our client-side Moxi should get you on-par performance. I'd like to see if that meets your needs and if not, see what we can do to improve Moxi's performance.
Thanks again for your continued interest, hope I was able to help.

Thanks Jacob. I don't really have a lot of information or experience with Hibernate. My general response (and I believe this to still be valid) is that anything you can do with memcached you can do with Membase (and more). You don't really NEED vbucket support since we have Moxi to handle the translation.
I will certainly bring this up to our engineering team but it would be good to know exactly what more is needed that is not already there.
Thanks again!
Perry
