I see that you just made an official release on March 16. Congrats.

How does this release differ from the 1.4.4-14 release that has been available in labs? Is there a changelog? Is the release just the packaging of the latest Labs release with a graphical installer and a web interface or are there functional changes/fixes/differences as well? Thanks.

Brian

The labs release of memcached does not include:
- application multi-tenancy with cache buckets and SASL-authentication support*
- memcached bucket engine support*
- web console
- complete Windows support
- REST interface
- recommended client libraries

This list isn't exhaustive but includes the most significant differences. Are you considering upgrading your current deployment of the 1.4.4 labs release?

* these features are scheduled to be pushed back upstream into the community memcached this week; memcached 1.6

Rod,

Thanks for the quick followup. I think I was a bit confused by the announcement. I thought that the release of NorthScale Memcached Server was the evolution of the community labs edition, which would then be abandoned. I was obviously incorrect. As I understand it now, the community labs version ("Moxi?") is your open-source version of the memcached engine that runs on Windows, while the new NorthScale Memcached Server includes the community edition, as well as proprietary additions such as the web console, REST interfaces, etc. Is that correct? Is it correct that you will continue to keep the community labs version in sync with future NorthScale Memcached Server releases?

We have no plans to upgrade our servers at this time, however, we have been working with the community version and that could change. Thanks again for your help.

Brian

Hi Brian,

No, you are correct.
A) we are releasing the open source components of the NorthScale Memcached Server this week in a publicly available repository which will include source for building on Windows,
B) the NorthScale Memcached Server will take the place of previous releases of our community memcached releases,
C) we will also be actively pushing code upstream into the memcached open source project.

Let me know if that makes sense. Or if you have any other questions. Thanks.
